I don't understand this photo fabbing thing, what's it all about?

I've seen posts and status updates asking people to fab their pics, what is gained from that other than an ego boost?

I've set mine so they can't be Fabbed as I don't like the thought of randoms rating me or feeling that it's a popularity contest.

Am I missing something here?
