Under the Duvet

Well it's not really an emergency, but the freezer part of my fridge freezer has packed up. Fridge is still cold/light on/motor running but the freezer defrosted itself and now won't refreeze.

Any thoughts? Is it likely to be something simple/repairable, or is it going to be more cost effective to get a new one?

I've tried the old turn it/ off turn it on again trick, and the dial is whacked up to 5 but still no joy.

Grrr.

I'd check to see if there is any kind of puncture on the inside.

Some years ago i was trying defrost mine with a knife as it had completely iced up due to my lazyness, and I put the knife through the inside. It was only a small nick but I could hear all the gasses escaping. After that it was fucked.

When this has happened to me it was the fan had iced up. I had to defrost the fan before it would work again. If there is a separate thermostat that is another possibility.

I’m no expert though just beating it on a couple of my experiences over the years

Probably best to get a new one as its either a gas or more likley electrical issue and the things are not really designed to be fixed these days.

Yeah that did cross my mind but I've not attacked it recently. It just went off on its own.

It's only about 4 years old

evaporator fan motor may have packed in or pcb but check to make sure your door is closing properly as when the door is open it won't work just my opinion though

Is the fridge still cold?

And is the radiator on the back hot.

If the gas is gone it should slowly just cool to room temp.

Otherwise chexk the obvious you havent accidentally hit a button and set it to a warm temperature/'defrost have you?

port talbot

If the fridge part is working correctly, there may be two compresors one for the fridge, one for the freezer, regassing the freezer is about £100 depends on who does it.

If it's only 4 years old go back to the shop and tell them it's faulty and under the sale of goods act they have a duty to repair it

Assuming you have proof of purchase of course...

That is usually only good for 12 months though.

Did you take out an extended warranty OP? Worth checking on the off chance as they do push it.

Think was only under guarantee for two years so that's well expired.

Wish I could afford a brand new Smeg, love the retro look.

Could be the thermostat...use the model number off your appliance when looking for replacement spare parts.
