I certainly can't think of any that have been better than the book, as good as perhaps (Silence Of The Lambs is a good example and am sure there are others that I can't think of right now) but I'm not sure a film could ever be better than the book - books not only provide a lot more detail than you could possibly ever fit into a 2 hour film, but they allow you to use one of the most powerful tools you have, your imagination.

That kind of ties in with my comment further up - often a film can seem not as good if you've already read the book, because the actors chosen don't fit how you'd imagined them at all - conversely if you read the book after seeing the film, your imagination is forever coloured by the actor that played the part.

I think that I'm inclined to agree with GM. It's nigh on impossible to convey the imagery and 'richness' of a great book in just 2 hours.

You can tell the story well and convey an awful lot from good acting, writing and direction but nothing compares to picturing it yourself.

The main issue is that with a film you're getting one person's impression of how they picture it, limited by the technology available. No one can see a book how everyone sees it, now matter how visionary they may be.

Jurassic Park the book was good. Though a lot of the DNA stuff at the start was hard for my young mind and most people's minds at the time.. to grasp hold of.

Given the nature of the story, it was key to the plot, given Michael Crightons science fiction heritage, it needed to be reasonably accurate as well. I think the film did a much better job of putting the whole story together than the book did, especially the dumbed down DNA explanation, allowed us to move onto to the more thrilling parts.

I really don't understand why the movie industry feels it has to change significant chunks of book stories though.. to make them more palatable for people with short attention spans. Dumbing down groundbreaking research in genetic science isn't the same thing.

I can't remember much of the book, I think most of it is in the film sequel to be honest.

It was originally written as a serial novel... and then he re-edited it to be a novel. But I’m holding my copy right now and it’s 448 pages. That’s not a novella. The Shawshank Redemption, on the other hand, is based on a novella

I felt The Green Mile was really short, but I suppose that is in comparison to some of the others. It was a quick read.

I liked Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption more than the film but I'll happily watch the film again and again.

It’s a quick read and it’s short but it’s nowhere near his shortest novel. It’s just that, when his books are big... they’re big (IT, Under the Dome, The Stand, The Dark Tower, 11.22.63...)

I haven't been to see The Dark Tower film. I read The Gunslinger in the 80s and then all the rest as they emerged. Even when he lost his way it would still be better than an adaptation.

It was okay as a stand alone but doesn’t stand up to the books... or get anywhere near them

I read the book then saw the film. Didn't get the fuss over it! Same with the Life of Pi. Read it first then watched. Underwhelmed by both books and films. Sorry!

Good call on TV shows, increasingly book adaptations on the small screen are cropping up and doing more justice to the source material. Game of Thrones is a perfect example
