Why oh why is the Maidenhair fern a plant that I seem to be unable to keep alive?

On a plus note my Medinilla Magnifica is looking splendid.

Do you have indoor plants? Any favourites? Or tips for keeping certain ones alive?

Hillside desolate

I like cactuses, because I forget to water them but they're almost impossible to kill.

Maidenhairs are buggers, they dont like fluctuating temperatures or moisture, so watering should be little and often.. My flat was full like a jungle, my bed was surrounded like an arab tent with muslin then surrounded by small trees.. I was lucky, worked St Michaels Mount so always plenty of exotics

I used to keep cacti, low maintenence and just need a quick sprinkling every now and again, not unlike myself

I got bored of them eventually, the lack of real colour/ change meant they were just kinda sat there.

I was going to post a thread earlier about plants!

I suck at plants. Always forget about them. But a wee boy and his foster nanny got me a wee Christmas pot with a wee plant at Christmas time. It’s on my kitchen window sill and gets watered, the flowers have started to sprout (they’re wee red ones, no idea what they are) so I’m doing well so far

I'm terrible at keeping houseplants alive as I forget to actually look after them. Considering I'm a gardener by trade that's pretty bad

I grow chillis and herbs on my window sill I can just about keep them alive.

In my office I have tried to keep various plants on my desk including cactus and all have died. Although I did chuck the cactus at someone so that may have killed that.

I have a self imposed ban on keeping plants because I always kill them and that makes me sad. I think I will stick to flowers

I’ve never been good with indoor plants and like you, Babs, have always erred to cut flowers (which I adore).

I am successful in the garden so 2019 is my concerted effort at becoming an indoor house plant guru. I’ve a veritable jungle built up over tha last two months getting them all, making their pebble beds, getting a humidifier, plant mister and the like. And tons of research to ensure I know what to do with each. But the maidenhair fern (of which over the years I’ve killed many) is already looking peaky - the little bugger.

If they all die then at least I really did give it a wholehearted try this year.

Got a bit of a herb garden growing in the conservatory in the back. Was never a green thumb but it sees to be working quite nicely. Basil, chives, cilantro and ginger

Houseplants are dead easy to keep alive. Just follow the instructions. It's really not rocket science! Having said that plants and animals aren't my domain

I've had a new plant in a pot in my kitchen since October. When would it be safe to put it outside?

It should be fine any time. They're hardy little things.

I’d be happy with a good green fingering.

I can keep peace lilies alive. They seem pretty indistructable and can be half dead hanging from the pot but still revive with water.
