They make it look so easy! Knackered old house, rip it back to the brick and make it amazing.

Has anyone done this? Did you get the builders in or have a go yourself?

Any top tips?

I renovated my current home. It wasn't quite as bad as having to take right back to bare bricks (though did have to in some areas).

Did most of it myself (with a little help from some family members).

Hired the services of a plasterer, but pretty much everything else was done by us.

Best tip is to employ people to do the work who know what they are doing and have good recommendations.

Did it once.

Took years longer than I thought as I was doing work myself after working.

It broke me, on the inside.

Never again.

Although it did get us on the housing ladder and we’d never have the nice new house we bought with the profits.

In a town Fab forgot

I did it with my old house, bit at a time over a few years, room by room.

Did most of the work myself. Only thing I didn't touch was plumbing and plastering.

Really enjoyed it.

Done it loads as not much I can't do (male here) made a good bank balance out of it too, just a shame when you're having to move every 2 years to start again tho.

East Sussex

We're in the middle of doing ours ourselves including redesigning the garden. We did get a plumber to do the bathrooms though. It's taking longer than we thought .

Top tip, make sure you've got the right tools for job and if you don't have them, buy them. It'll save hours.

However long you think it'll take double it and the same goes for the cost. With older property one thing will lead to another needing sorted.

London

My parents bought a relic in 1976. For a year we lived on a building site. That put me off for life. Every house I've owned has only needed cosmetic work and that was hard enough having decorators in.

I love Homes Under the Hammer and wish I could stomach renovating.

Can't you find one you like and stay in it?

I can't even paint in a straight line so I'd have to get experts in if I did it.
