Memory ain't what it used to be!

I was just watching the Taron Egerton/Elton John duet when the camera panned back and I noticed almost everyone in the audience had their phones out filming!

Is this what we've become? Missing a moment because we're too busy trying to have evidence it happened?

How guilty are you of this? Is your phone full of photos and videos or do you rely on good old fashioned memory to capture life's events?

Is it really for memory purposes or is it for posting all over the internet?

I don't do this ever but perhaps I should because my memory is utterly crap.

Well that's how I interpret it. It's like people are keen to have evidence they were actually there.

I think it’s a recent phenomenon of ‘if there’s no picture or video it didn’t happen!’

I stand up I front of them. Then explain they're not watching so I thought I'd get a better view than the one with their arm, high in the air blocking my view.

Put the phone down you tool!

Every time I go to a concert I always say I’m not going to film any of it and spend most of the time with my phone in the air, every time I go to a fireworks display, I say the same thing and what do I do?!

I love taking photos to capture moments, doughnut not so much.

your imagination

I tend to forget it's only when a friend or family member whips out their phone to record moments that I think, oh yeah, I should get a pic or two. So I definitely prefer experiencing over recording. Maybe that's why I have never been into taking play pics or videos either. I just prefer to get lost in the moment and enjoy it

I'd rather than enjoy the performance than watch it through my phone..

Somewhere out there

I’ve done both at concerts - although I don’t know why I’ve bothered recording things looking back - I’ve never watched them again and never posted them anywhere x

For nights out I am renowned as the photographer of our group, mainly just because I hate getting in on pics x

I find that so annoying, I like to watch and experience it first x

We take a lot of photos when we're out (with cameras rather than phones) its a hobby of ours. Its part of the experience for us and we deliberately visit places to photograph them.

We wouldn't film or photograph something like a concert or a wedding ceremony though, we'd want to be "in the moment" for that sort of thing.

It will be a mixed bag.

Some will be doing it for attention on the Internet, as you say evidence that they were there.

While others will generally want it as a memory. Some will be doing it to show others who could not attend or witness it.

The option and technological convenience did not exist in previous years/decades. If it had, it would still have happened in similar ways.

Hiding in the shadows

I'm a compulsive photo/video taker

For me it's about the memories.

I have very few photos from my childhood

My dad had an Agfa system, the pics are all on little plastic squares & you need a special protector to view them.

Any actual photos I did have from 1985ish onwards including all my eldest sons baby/childhood pics where lost due to flood damage.

I now only have photos of those years that other people have given me

So many memories lost

Then the digital age arrived, I could take pics & store them online.

I created closed, Facebook pages for my youngest kids.

A mini diary of their lives.

Memories I will never lose.
