Sunday lunch. Making roast (pork).

An unexpected visitor turns up who is a vegetarian. You make a cauliflower cheese for them, all the rest is ok.

You put the roast spuds on. After 30 minutes cooking it dawns on you that, like always, you’ve poured the fat from the meat into the spuds.

What do you do? Tell them? Not tell them? Make more spuds? Burger, bugger, bugger!

Tell them, I'd have been pretty upset when I was veggie and someone didn't tell me.

Really should tell them, it would be wrong not to.

Tell them and ask if they'd like some bread and butter instead. There's a limit to how accommodating you should be for a guest.

When I was veggie my mum would do be a veggie roast then pour the meat gravy on my dinner from the juices of the meat. I'd tell her each time I couldn't eat it and she'd say it's only gravy. Bless her

Definitely tell them. Not your fault they’re vegetarian but it is their right to know what they’re eating.

Tell them, but if its an unexpected visitor then really it can't be helped if you can't offer a full veggie meal.

Exactly. If I turn up unexpectedly at meal times I don't expect to be fed. I wouldn't turn up unexpectedly at meal times though.

It's extremely rude for visitors to show up without an invite and expect to be fed. If what I've prepared isn't acceptable they would be free to fuck off to a restaurant instead

Being veggie is their choice. Turning up unannounced is their choice. I would tell them, it's their choice whether the eat or not.

After the potatoes have finished cooking, chuck a few in the dishwasher to get rid of any surface animal fats. Problem solved

How come vegetarians never redress the balance and provide meat when uninvited carnivores turn up unexpectedly? Double standards?

Just asking?

"How come vegetarians never redress the balance and provide meat when uninvited carnivores turn up unexpectedly? Double standards?

Because that goes against the ethics of choosing not to eat meat

My daughter has been vegan for years. I am vegan for about 8 months now.

I will provide meat etc... She won't.

Vegan is a political term. If you assign it to yourself it is about opposing all forms of animal 'abuse' or unethical farming / gaining financially from the lives of misery that animals are forced to live. Providing meat / fish / dairy for your guests means you perpetuate the unnecessary slaughter.

I'm a non meat eater I guess. Cos I will buy meat for other people.

She's political about it. I'm health conscious about it.

P.S. Tell them there animal fat on the spuds / Would they like to have spuds or not?

Simple

If you have rice/pasta / bread.... offer that ( or frozen chips or hash browns )

or offer extra veg.

I didn’t tell! But fresh spuds were made! And before you ask, I did zoom out and get veggie cheese for them!

What did make me laugh though, suddenly realised we didn’t have vegetable gravy. Sent my son out who cam back with chicken gravy, as that’s close enough!

Chicken gravy is the one that's most likely to have animal fat in. Just saying......

I have strict veggie friends.

Don’t lie to them guests, just be honest they would rather not eat that have something non veg.
