Those that write a covering letter get my attention, because they read and understood the instructions. Those that can't be bothered go in the 'not suitable' pile. Your covering letter needs to cover how you fit the job (see an early post on the job description and person specification, which might also be called a role profile or other names). You're good with words so use that skill to get the job you want, without sucking anyone off. | |||

For the last few years I’ve had a minimum wage job in retail to fit in with the kids and my mum! I’m in the process of trying to do a job description for my current job which doesn’t make it obvious that an 8 year old could easily do it! It’s a case of dissecting the tasks/job you do into individual skills and highlighting those skills! I - for instance - am now highly skilled at putting things into paper bags whilst chatting to people! You also need to highlight any qualities you have which make you particularly qualified for the job you want to apply for! It can be a good idea to have a few, slightly different, CV’s - one for each industry sector that you’re interested in! Possibly depends on the depth of the security checks they take, if they do indeed actually do one. It’s worth doing your CV if not for this job but the next. | |||

" I work with a vulnerable adult now because the lady I look after has a progressive illness but I’ve acquired this since my employment commenced, she’s fully aware of it and all the surrounding circumstances. But yeah it would be an enhanced one because there’s a youth side as well as an adult side to this new job. What about a detailed explanation to accompany it so it’s in context? | |||

There is legislation on employing ex-offenders and if the offense has been discharged then it shouldn't be an issue. However, it is better to state it when you get to that section of the form. If the DBS comes back with a concern that looks like it might be a safeguarding or fraud risk then that is different. Are you likely to assault the people in your care if you get the job? | |||

It’s any words that can be perceived as a threat. Even telling someone to shut up can be classed as threatening behaviour. It’s pathetic. | |||

I have to dismiss if the DBS comes back with anything that may be a risk and offer letters say that the job is on condition of a clear DBS. It doesn’t say anything about criminal records but does say candidates must pass security screening checks. Does that mean if it returns anything at all it won’t be considered? I had a caution for common assault from 2004 when I last worked there but something has happened since and now I officially have a criminal record but there’s significant background to it and not my fault, I know everyone says that but this genuinely was such a stupid thing and because I admitted to it I now have it on my record. It’s a section 4a public order offence so nothing major major. If it’s gonna fail on that it’s pointless me stressing and wasting my time with the application then? I'd fail you for that as I work with vunerable adults. Is it an enhanced DBS check? I work with a vulnerable adult now because the lady I look after has a progressive illness but I’ve acquired this since my employment commenced, she’s fully aware of it and all the surrounding circumstances. But yeah it would be an enhanced one because there’s a youth side as well as an adult side to this new job. What about a detailed explanation to accompany it so it’s in context?" I have and do employ people with records. I believe in rehabilitation. There are some roles I could not employ someone with a record for, though. There will be a section at the end of the application form for you to declare your record and write possibly write your explanation. If it was more than 10 years ago it won't come up on the DBS but it is still better to be honest on the form. You can also show you have worked with and for a vulnerable adult without a problem, talk about what you have learnt and how that will help you in your work with offenders. For the Youth Offender side it would depend what the record is for. | |||

Most big companies apparently have software that will read a cv in 10 seconds and just picks up on buzz words. One employment app actually "read" my cv and summarised it back to me. Their system had read that I hadn't been employed since 2001. I was asked did I have any questions - yes, was the person reading the cv blind as my cv clearly details all my employment. (Response was "I can't have read it properly" - no shit love yet you still have a job!!!!). Tailor your cv to any job you apply for " . The part about the buzz words is true it’s best to read the job description and type of person they are looking for as sometimes the clue to the buzz words are in their.Have more than one CV for different types of jobs.You do not have to put your date of birth on a CV now a days.A CV needs to only be 2 pages long.If you google National Career Service there is advice and a freephone number you can call for CV help or make a appointment at a local office.Also in North London most of the jobcentres have National Career Service staff on site and if they are not too busy may see people currently working who want to update their CV. | |||

"I apply for most of my jobs through different apps (Adzuna. Indeed and the like). There is not often an opportunity within this to include a covering letter - and out of choice id always send one. Highlighting why I could be a good choice for the company using phrases contained within their vacancy ad. I'll get a bloody job if it kills me!" Put a profile section at the top of your CV where you do that succinctly for those sites. I generally discount applications I receive through those sites as they don't have enough information. (I usually haven't posted the role to them and they have been mined from where I have posted the role.) | |||

"Tbh I’m in almost the same boat! My CV is fairly up to date but it’s ages since I’ve had a ‘grown up’ job! For the last few years I’ve had a minimum wage job in retail to fit in with the kids and my mum! I’m in the process of trying to do a job description for my current job which doesn’t make it obvious that an 8 year old could easily do it! It’s a case of dissecting the tasks/job you do into individual skills and highlighting those skills! I - for instance - am now highly skilled at putting things into paper bags whilst chatting to people! You also need to highlight any qualities you have which make you particularly qualified for the job you want to apply for! It can be a good idea to have a few, slightly different, CV’s - one for each industry sector that you’re interested in! Hope this helps Im trying to re purpose skills in my current mumsy basic job to fit in with something much more high brow. It will take some creative writing I know that much " I hear ya sister!
