I'm a lifelong spurs fan (so the scum that you speak of) I've been to see loads of other teams play, I watched Arsenal at the first Cardiff final and sat drinking with Arsenal fans post game. None of them were anything other than good guys. Rivalry is great, abuse and violence has no place

I'd take that sort of thing from a friend or family member, from strangers on the Internet? If you want 'banta' then do it with people who know you. Personally I'm perfectly capable of giving someone stick about their team without getting abusive or making derogatory comments

"If u can’t handle being called a scum in football then I rest my case.. massive difference in what happened to football fan as that was violence but I’m sure we have been called worse in the middle of a bit of rough sex lol so if our tolerance levels are that we can’t handle being called scum in a contact sport like football then we need to watch netball as it’s good for football fans and especially players to show a bit of aggression in a derby ?? By the way hope spurs win so Man Utd get 4th " You've missed the point. It's name calling. Why do you use the word 'Scum'? Why do you hate those other fans when supporting their club?

It's about the escalating nature if that type of behaviour. One day it's calling people scum the next day it's getting involved in organised fights.... It happens. Other sports manage to have rivalries without the ridiculous name calling. Passion isn't aggression. As for relating it to what we get calkex during sex..... I've never been called scum while fucking

I can tell the difference between passionate words said during sex and being called names simply because of the team you support. Or is it OK the have names shouted at you in the street just because it's a physical game? Abuse has no place, pure and simple. Trying to draw parallels between the people playing the game, sex and random name calling is frankly ludicrous.

I haven’t missed the point I don’t personally use the word scum but if a rival fan said it I’d understand as you can’t love your football rivals so u want them to lose so course it’s hatred ?? Man Utd fans hate Liverpool and vise versa arsenal fans hate Tottenham, Everton vs Liverpool etc u can’t help but hate the team that plays u ? If I played a sport socially or for fun I would not hate my opponent but if I was playing for a team I could not perform to my best unless I really wanted to beat them ? But this is a debate so we all have our own opinions no one is right and no one is wrong lol

I have no problem with rivels calling each other scum, football is still tribal to an extent I'm Scouse and work with lots of utd fans, citah fans and bitters lots is said in jest but when Boro fans sing sign on without a hint of irony well hmmm....

I'm not sure you answered why you call them scum? It's probably be a use your peers do/did and you know no better. It's quite alright to dislike/hate your rivals.

Passion and support absolutely yes but abuse, hatred and aggression no..

"And.... if u can’t read I’ll say it again I never said it’s ok to be called scum in sex not once so read it again ?? And yes any sport where there is contact is called a contact sports, non contact sport is where there is no means to touch a opponent. And for the comment that I don’t know any better due to my peers ?? Well any time you want to messge and talk about any topic I’m happy to do so, I’ve only had a opinion and whether it’s right or wrong it’s my opinion ? So if u think calling someone a scum is wrong then how better are you then commenting on my peers or not knowing any better ???" You're right..... You said we've been called worse than scum during sex. I'm not sure I have. I'll give you the contact sport bit but I'll reiterate that other non contact sports can have rivalry and passion without aggression and abuse.

You want your opponent to lose so therefore 'of course its hatred'? You're skipping straight from love to hate there. No, you can have rivalry with a team and not hate them, you can support a team and not abuse the opposition and their fans. Also you're drawing direct parallels between the players and the supporters. The supporters are observing not playing, there quite a difference between the two. Yes I expect the players to be passionate about playing and winning but you can be damn certain that as professionals they respect each other. It's perfectly possible to support a team without abusing other people. Quite why you're defending it is beyond me.

Look at rugby, there is no need to segregate fans. Wales vs England last weekend, both sets of fans sit together and mix in the bars and city centre without issue. You're not likely to get a more intense rivalry than that.

"Don't know what it 8s with these fans of the big clubs. Leyton Orient fan here, love going to away games and mixing with away fans. My bother is a Gooner and he was apprehensive about going in the supporters club of Bristol Rovers a few years back. Said it would never happen at a big club. Never really understood that." I went the Bristol derby years ago, I saw a Bristol city fan on crutches thrown over a wall! (They took his crutches too) only other time I've seen an assault like that was by a fella called crazy Dave in a pub called the dispensary in Liverpool.. you can check the reviews here!! https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g186337-d3672653-r179940643-The_Dispensary-Liverpool_Merseyside_England.html

It is used as an autonym within the Ashkenazi Jewish community, and also used as slang by European football fans, anti-semites, and others. Its usage may be controversial in modern English language. It is not usually considered offensive when pronounced /'ji?d/ (rhyming with deed), the way Yiddish speakers say it, though some may deem the word offensive nonetheless. When pronounced /'j?d/ (rhyming with did) by non-Jews, it is commonly intended as a pejorative term. It is used as a derogatory epithet by antisemites along with, and as an alternative to, the English word 'Jew'.[1]

But the rest is just banter You heard of it? no its not banter calling someone a yid its a racial taunt. you heard of that? Yid being short for Yidish how is that remotely a taunt? Secondly, it cannot be racism since Judaism is not a race it is a religion. The word Yid (/'ji?d/; Yiddish: ?????)[clarification needed] is a Jewish ethnonym of Yiddish origin. It is used as a derogatory epithet by antisemites along with, and as an alternative to, the English word 'Jew'.[1] And your point is?" Just posting about the term yid and how it can be seen as pejorative or derogatory as it was being discussed. Perfectly relevant but thanks for your question.

" back in the day it use to be really bad..... i am not going to lie, and when i was a lot lot younger it one of those things that people found funny..... but times have changed and so did we! i think the only people who use the term now (and i am not going to say it) are really spurs fans themselves.... they have reclaimed it as part of their identity.... back in the day spurs was "the jewish club"... arsenal was "an irish club".... and then the likes of chelsea and west ham drew some really "unsavoury" people... i knew boys in all crews... the headhunters, the ICF ect and its weird knowing how close i was to some really vicious people (i was the big smart black guy so no one tested me) in sports parlance i don't find the word "scum" offensive.... it just describes a different level of hatred... (michigan state university will always call the university of michigan scUM for various reasons... they don't get offended) i have heard all sorts... wasps vs saracens games back in the day when one was at Sudbury, and one was at Cockfosters.... when i was at uni, leicester vs loughborough games always had a different level of hatred attached to them..... afterwards, the levels went down at bit....

"If you really follow football then you will understand the tribal approach. If you have followed football for many years and been in 60,000 plus stadiums stood watching your team then you will get it. But if you are the type of person who thinks sitting down at a match is Okay, that controlling your passion and applauding the other teams effort is the right thing to do or that not referring to your opposition without being pc and polite is unwelcome then you are not a football fan. You are simply a misguided fool that has sought solace of your peers and probably still were the bed. Football is what it is because of who follows it. It would be like rugby if everyone sat together and cheered each other and walked off home in the sunset hand in hand....mundane! In my opinion!!" Your opinion is ridiculous in my opinion. I am no less of a fan if anything because I refuse to call the opposition names or if I can appreciate a good passage of play from the opposition. In fact not being dragged into mindless tribalism and focusing on the game probably makes me a proper fan. All too often those who get excited about the name calling and fighting are simply there for the fight not the sport.

I have spent time on many a terrace both at White Hart Lane and various grounds around the country thank you very much and I haven't wet the bed for a very long time either!! Whilst I "get" the tribal mentality of football and agree that following a team involves passion and a sense of pride etc - that passion for me has always been more channelled into supporting my team rather than hating the opposition, yeah there are times that passion may bubble over in the heat of the moment, but it's contained within a 90 minute span and doesn't resort to derogatory name calling outside of those 90 minutes or , for instance, starting a thread where I refer to the opposition as "scum".

"We have some misguided men here who are under the sad diminished illusion that football is the place for those who are liberal minded or understanding of the other side. It is not. It is about unbridled uncompromising relentless support of your team without frontiers and without lowering ones self to the sad and cowering position of followers of pastimes such as rugby. If you don't get it or don't like it then do something different, knit yoghurt on a Saturday afternoon or go to a save the vegetable rally in Trafalgar square but don't pansy around with tour self appreciating loulou attitude anywhere near football...you don't fit! And before you troop off down the usual route that your sort does with the hooligan and Neanderthal comments, most of the 'thugs' or 'faces' at football who have been attributed to violence or nowadays verciferous behaviour were and are lawyers, respected city traders, bankers and well placed people in high office jobs. So if you don't like how football is, as I say, trot off and pick flowers. You won't be missed" That isn't how football is. It's how some think it should be and so perpetuate out dated and unwanted stereotypes

Don't use the word scum...that is child like. If you have a rival or local adversary you tend not to refer to them unless you have to. The opposition on the day is the enemy after that they disappear. I'm of an age where I can vividly recall how football was when it was a violent and hostile place to go to. I am not advocating that again but I would hate to see it curve itself into the farcical levels of the pastimes populated by the middle class/let's go on a march and all be fluffy with the world morons who have made the world a difficult enough place to find half palatable.
