Saving someones life..

But they end up thanking God instead.

It was only a couple weeks ago I was out with my dad on the boat with a few others, it was late and dark coming back into shore.

We noticed a couple lads that were d*unk in the water struggling and screaming for help with one lad on the walkway... We end up helping them out of the water ... But they didn't thank us they started thanking the lord but.... They started giving us abuse saying they didn't need our help they were fine .. just been drinking and having fun....

So we informed the harbour master the situation and got the police to take care of them and escort them away.

Afterwards we started thinking we should've just left them in the water, see if God helped them then the arrogant twats.

So what are your thoughts on people that you've helped or saved but end up thanking God instead?

They usually say thank god YOU’RE here. Meaning they know god didn’t come down to this physical plane to personally help them but he sent someone to them.

A good deed needs no reward anyway, it’s like the people that post on Facebook that they just gave a tenner to a homeless person, when you want recognition for good deeds it no longer becomes a good deed IMO.

I've helped a few homeless people before, the best ones that thank me personally I'm fine with. . I tend to help them regularly by handing out cans of food ... The ones that thank god ... Not so much but I still help.

Where I live the past couple of years homelessness has just shot up ... Never use to see any homeless but then universal credit roles out and boom it increases.

I've never been in your situation but I'd be pretty miffed if I pulled someone out of the water and they thanked god. I think most of us like to feel that our actions are appreciated. Maybe they thought you were like Maradonna and used the hand of god

Had you not have helped them and saw on the news the next day something terrible had happened then how would you be feeling now? Seeing that and walking away? You did what you thought was best at the time.

It’s not the same at all but when I worked at a golf club once, a dog was running around the course and didn’t have a collar on, so I managed to get him into my office, gave him some water and called the local dog place and they came to collect him, the owner the next day came and started making a scene saying we owe them money because they had to pay for an over night stay!! This was before Facebook is what it is now and I didn’t really have any options, I didn’t call them straight away either just in case the owners turned up, I didn’t get thanks that day, just an earful but i’d do it again if I had too, to make sure the animal was safe.

Honestly I have given money and food to homeless people all my life and not one has ever thanked god, without exception I've never had anything other than sincere gratitude

I’ve never saved anyone’s life, but this is the closest I’ve came.

I was working as a nightclub doorman, a regular female customer came in, totally sober. We knew her, as she always stopped to give us some chat. A little while later a rather large, muscular Eastern European man came in by himself. He stood out as this was a gay club (he was told).

About an hour or so later, they both leave together; I was dealing with something else, so I didn’t notice straight away. (This was an underground club and there were only 2 ways to leave, onto the main street or down a dead end ally). I realised this girl was completely out of it and he was practically carrying her, down the dead end ally. It must have taken me maybe 20-30 seconds to think about it, realise what was going on and to get there. When I got there, the girls skirt was above her waist, her pants were on the floor and this guys penis was out. There is no mistake what was going to happen.

We took him to the floor (which wasn’t easy) and we got the police. He was taken away, as was the girl. When they came back for a statement the police told me they found drugs on him, but they didn’t say which type.

The following weekend myself and the other doormen are standing at the bar waiting to be told to open the doors. One of the barstaff tells me there is a bloke outside asking for me, by name, and he looks angry. We think it’s an unhappy punter with bad intentions, so we all go out.

Turns out the guy wasn’t angry, he was emotional. It was the girls father. The police told him what happened and who I was. He had came down to say thank you and shake my hand.

Only time anyone has ever said thank you. Not in the same category as saving a life, but a good thing none the less. And no one was thanking God! (Because he certainly wasn’t there!).

So you're only into saving lives for the gratitude and thanks?

I stopped to give an old man cpr on the road a few years back before an ambulance arrived. Never heard if he made it or not but just glad i had the knowledge to try and save him

I dont stick around for thanks or really care about their thoughts as they are reacting to a crisis situation... We once had similar when I was on lifeboats, the guy went nuts that we pulled him out of the water.. I think sometimes the ego can suffer and feel embarrassment so once it calms down it re emerges and I think they re convincing themselves that they were good, especially when alcohols involved... Much prefer animal rescues as the thanks come from the heart n soul of the animal not ego and testosterone.. Do you know I ve never had a woman react negatively in a rescue situation

Knowing you've helped someone should be enough reward in itself.

When you try to turn it into self publicity it comes across as being immature and needy.

It's like a volunteer at a street soup kitchen taking a selfie with every homeless person and posting it on social media.

that's another thing that annoys me , rescue services getting the abuse off people on the streets, fire fighters getting rocks chucked at them and paramedics getting abuse on nights out by d*unks, these are the ones trying to save people and others find it funny to attack or abuse them? It gets me fuming it does.

But they chose to go into those jobs. Your average person on the street isn't trained in life saving or have crews or supplies around to help them.

Only morons don't recognise the great work that the emergency services do. I've seen a lot of praise for them recently.

I rank them 2 places in front of people who make a drama out of a silly story just to let a bunch of internet strangers know they've got a boat.

Coming back from Manchester village after a night out (me dressed) with an ex girlfriend. We saw a guy running down the street a little further up another person running, once we got closer we realized it was a girl and quickly figured out she and him weren't out for a jog. Needless to say, she was in our car and off we went. It turns out he was bothering her in a club and eventually the bouncers threw him out, saw him on her way home and she started running to get away after he shouted at her.

I don't see we did anything special I'd hope someone would do the same for me as well. But imagine her thinking carry on running or get in the car with the husky voiced woman
