How come girls are never given nicknames?

At one of my old places of work we had 3 Daves. One was over 6ft so we called him 'Big Dave, Another was below average height so we called him 'Little Dave'. The 3rd Dave had one leg shorter than the other so we cruelly called him 'Big Dave Little Dave' due to his lollopy walking style.

I tried to give myself a nickname once but it didn't stick. Nicknames aren't chosen, theyre foisted upon the victim whether he likes it or not.

I say "he" because it does seem to be a male phenomenon, I remember a 'Screwy Sue' at school but thats about it. Sure there's Shaz & Kaz but they're just shortened versions, not really nicknames.

A lot of nicknames relate to incidents or personal features and we tend to be more sensitive with ladies....unless you're Screwy Sue of course.

Have this on me, it will improve your Sunday morning:

We know lots of Kim’s, we have to have a different discription for each of them one of them is old work Kim, another is pig witch face work Kim, plus we have another’s that are family related.

Usually if there is more than once person with the same name it’s usuallt backed up by something that describes them well!

Geeky x

Worthing

I've given nicknames to office women in the past we had. "The Golden Fairy Princess" as she was very pretty. "Mrs Wobble bum" as she had a superb bum that wobbled as she walked. "The Scary One" as she was always in a mood. All were told (without me knowing) that I called them this and all thought it was very funny!

King's Crustacean

If 3 people have the same name it stands to reason that they'd be renamed in order to be able to distinguish between them when they are referred to.

Bless you for being gentle with the ladies. Gallant

It’s usually my neighbours that cop for them

Will never dare tell ‘mr & Mrs Mong’ at number 3 what we ‘affectionately’ call them though

Don't be shy, the nickname police don't work weekends anyway.

Somewhere near here

We had man with beard and woman with beard (in hindsight that was cruel).

I was named spankles...being the shortest of that group of friends they’d jest that I have ankles that bend, various form of ankles then came, anks, spanks and finally it settled with spankles.

I know women with nicknames or they’ve changed names. Quite a few use their middle name over their given first name.

Hiding in the shadows

I've had several nicknames in my life, some people still use them years later as that's how they first met me

My childhood nickname, my dad gave me. I missswrote it on a father's day card, my version stuck, my mum & family still call me it.

Big Bird... Yes, I'm tall

Red.. My hair was pillar box red for over 20yrs

I've had the same nickname given to me by my Sensei when I was about 20

Most people in real life call me by that, and not my actual name

It's very appropriate

your imagination

Chances are, we probably all have far more nicknames than we ever knew, because nobody told us. Just reading this thread and names people have put on co-workers, neighbours, etc., without their knowledge, stands to reason others have also done this. I've had pet-names I knew about... Still do in fact, but bet there are a few names I don't hear about either
