Somewhere In The Ether…

......or the converse saying, ‘You can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.’

Do you get along with your siblings/family or else do you hold an aversion to certain members of your family like the plague?

My life got infinitely better when I realised that they didn't know me or love me. I stopped trying, our relationship is delightfully superficial.

I used to have a big close knit extended family but as the older generation who were the centre pins have passed away it's a case of catching up at weddings and funerals now.

I'm still close to my parents but I barely see my siblings, I do know if I needed them they'd be there though.

I'm very close to my siblings, parents and nanna. Have an uncle knobhead that I don't bother with as he's repeatedly acted like a moron. He's tolerated if we run into him but no longer invited to any family dos.

I’m close to my brother...but while I love my family, I’m not close to anyone else. Just how it goes sometimes.

Blood isn't thicker than water. Some families are good together, some aren't.

Your friends are the family you choose for yourself.

I've learnt that so called family don't actually care very much at all

Not spoken to any of them for over a decade. I don't really need a family who always found me an embaressment, annoyance or a target for abuse and ridicule. Would love a close loving family but would rather have none than the ones I ended up with

I’ve not spoken to my mum in years and don’t plan to ever again. My dad can ring for 15seconds just to check I’m alive and he’s happy.

My friends are my family and I see their families more than my own.

Am very close to my parents and have good relationships with my cousins. The ladies of the family try to meet up a few times a year we go out for a meal or afternoon tea or other stuff. The males are much closer and tend to go out at least once a month. Then we a meet up in November for fireworks and usually at some other point over the year. I know that if I need then they are there for me and I am for them but as I don't live in my home town it's harder.

I didn’t see my family for years and only all got in touch when my brother had cancer. I don’t like my family and especially my real dad but have put all that aside to be a family again.

I love my brother, don't see him as often as I'd like too, that's because of his vile wife, she hates me. Feeling is mutual.

I've got one brother.

I'm very close to him and my parents. I'm not at all close to my extended family - uncle (now dead), cousins etc.

I agree.

You don't have to love a family member who has treated you badly, any more so than a non relative.

Don't feel guilty about it and don't get suckered into the whole blood is thicker than water thing.
