I've started looking for places to rent. I currently rent from daddy landlords but fancy renting properly lol trouble is I keep coming up against this no pets thing!

I only have one little cat and she's not messy!

Am I gonna have to wait till she dies to move? She's quite old so might be worth it lol

Why do landlords hate pets so much? I thought that was the idea of a deposit.... If they mess it all up you don't get it back?

Most have it as default to keep away people with 3 dogs or crazy cat ladies but many will allow 1 pet like a cat or house rabbit or rodents, etc if willing to pay an additional pet deposit. I'd suggest going to a letting agent who will either be able to find you property with a pet friendly landlord or negotiate with other landlords to allow 1 pet for an additional deposit.

I found when I was renting I would say that I would get all carpets professionally cleaned and bombed (that flea thing) on exit they were all fine. Also tell them to put in contract that you will remove all excrement from garden on a daily basis. They are usually fine with animals then

I had to wait until I was renting from a friend before I found someone OK with me having a cat.

My little toothless adopted stray called Keith is currently asleep next to me.

Sadly, the majority of landlords and letting agents have a blanket no pets policy.

Major rehoming charities have been campaigning for a while now to try and change this, cat’s protection in particular have been very vocal in their efforts. Alas nothing much seems to be changing yet.

The cats protection website has some good advice about renting and advocate speaking to landlords as some will rent to pet owners but don’t advertise this

We had this problem when we were looking for someone to rent,we have 2 cats.

Jack joined a fb group in the area we wanted,posted what we were after ans we got landlords who didn't mind pets from there .

Try posting an add on gumtree and explain your situation in the post or as said above try Facebook groups too

It’s often a standard thing they put in adverts. Make sure you ask them and tell them you’ve only got a cat. Some will ask for more deposit to cover potential damage.

Be wary of letting agents OP.

The last one I was involved with some years ago agreed to let me a ground floor flat and allow my cats but didn't inform the landlord of this.

My landlord was understandably rather pissed off but because I had it in writing from the letting agent that I would be bringing my cats they didn't evict me. They just asked for an additional deposit to cover and cleaning/repairs related to my cats and to avoid a bad relationship with the landlord I agreed.

As others have said it’s a blanket ban usually...so then they can choose rather than someone moving in with 4 unruly dogs say...
