You should absolutely refuse and its good to know how indispensable you are, time to ask for a pay rise if you ask us.

Seriously though, its totally out of order, make sure you take all the holiday you are due and simply do not answer you're phone if they keep calling

It is actually a form of bullying and if they persist you should keep a record of all the calls and then lodge an official complaint when you get back.

I know loads of people who have had this kind of problem with various jobs and some of them really do take the piss. How much recourse you have really depends on the enviroment you work in of course.

But remember, it is just a job, you don't live just to exist, you exist to live. Don't take any shit from them and I wouldn't be so obliging about swapping you're shifts in future.

I think part of the reason im digging my heels in with this is because someone recently whistle blew to the local papers regarding staffing issues

The response from my place of work was that there are NO staffing issues, the place is run safely at all times and there is no cause for concern

I don't entirely agree with that statement, but im not going to feel guilty as I know that everything is hunky dory according to the managers, therefore im having my time off

I will say something when I get back though,in fact im wondering if ill be spoken to before I get a chance to say anything, they will probably drag up some small print that says they have the right to ammend my shifts as and when it suits the needs of them

They do have the right to amend your shifts but only with suitable notice (which is the same amount of notice you have to give them for your holidays usually between 2-4 weeks depending on your company)

stand your ground... or u'll end up like me doing all the hard work and when you ask for a day off for your birthday getting crap from your manager!

Many years ago I worked for a guy that phoned my mom told her it was matter of life or death that he got in touch with me. He phoned hotel in Kos where I was stopping and dragged me back home. I did what I needed to do told him I was leaving and he ended up paying for new holiday and spends. When I got back from that one I made sure I was better paid than anyone else there. The joys of working for someone

I had this with the two jobs I worked a few years ago- decided after working 3 months 7 days a week between them I needed 4 days off.

I even told them I was going to Stockton for the weekend yet I was still phoned 6 times by each asking to come work and was I sure I was in England??????

I have a mobile phone for work... they gave it me.

When I am off work the voicemail messages says I am away from the business and what date I will return. After recording the message the phone gets switched off and doesn't get turned on again until 9am on the morning I return.

Worth checking your contract, I once had a simular problem with an employer, on checking I found that a phone call whilst on leave counted as 2 hours work time, as I was on leave it was payable at double time...

Once 12 hours pay was claimed for 3 x 2 minute phone calls they stopped doing it.

Try fifty (yes, 50!!) days without a day off.... and to make it worse... most of those days were over 15 hours!! No overtime, no extra days hols, no bonuses, but I did manage to avoid being put on a salary instead of being paid by the hour!!!

Fool to myself, I thought I was indespensible, until I went ill, then the boss told me he never asked me to do all those days, which is true, but with two managers off sick, one living in London to cover Canary Wharf, and one quitting, who did he think was going to run his company?

I left, and now am a small cog in a big machine, better paid and only do 36 hours a week, lovely!!!

Peterborough

I have a work mobile (supplied by my employer) and a personal one.

On my days off they do sometimes ring the work mobile for 'a couple of hours as a favour' and depending on what I'm doing and my mood will decide if I say yes or no.

If they keep ringing your personal number it's your right to ignore it on days off they've sanctioned. you've worked bloody hard to get those 3 days off don't let them ruin them by stressing you out

xx
