"Bullshit. Hang up a totally blank canvas and you’ll get some nause spouting shit about it being a “wonderful juxtaposition of our consciousness and desires”. Cunts. Prove me wrong. " Well if you and me were to hang up a bank canvas no one would say that. You have to be from within a certain circle

"If you're actually interested, have a listen to Grayson Perry's very entertaining Reith lecture in which he discusses contemporary art. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b03969vt" I would second this

"Art is really just down to individual opinion. I like some modern art but other stuff leaves me thinking "why did they bother"? It's the same with classic art though - I love Renoir, but think Van Gogh's work is just immature daubings done by an adult child given the wrong sized paintbrush." ear , ear

"My eldest is studying art at uni. The latest essay title is 'It's art because I say it is...discuss'. To such a bollocks waste of a student loan I say...my arse-hole is art cos I say it is....A+ please!!" Open titles like that should be applauded. They provoke thought and allow discussion and megacognition ..... Why should students be TOLD what to THINK.... ? I'd take my tax money back if that's what uni amounted too.

Surely the answer to that is different aesthetic preferences over time, different requirements to enter the hallowed space of received art and what's wrong with that, etc... A deconstruction of perceived notions of value in the aesthetic space. Potentially a fascinating topic.

" I mean, you're self evidently wrong because millions of people from all types of backgrounds get a lot out of such art. The bigger question is why that bothers you so much. Insecurity, perhaps?

To such a bollocks waste of a student loan I say...my arse-hole is art cos I say it is....A+ please!!" Think this kind of question used at 3rd level education says more about the subject and they it's continually trying to find it's place than anything else. I love art, was damn good in my teens and yes I'd have done interpretational art, but there would always be a starting point that leads the viewer to try and follow my thought, after all I was the creator. A lot of more modern stuff are influenced by our post truth society where the origin has little or no value, it's what you want it to be in your own mind. Simply put, it's lost its way, identity and tangeable value. Open to explore these more though.

" I get what you're trying to say, but numbers are not necessarily reflective of truth or real evidence of being right. Hitler tried the numbers thing, as is Monsanto in the agro industries. Just because millions do something or its done by the millions it doesn't me it's right. What is or has influenced peoples minds to consider or assume something has a bearing.

"Art is simply a visual representation of a concept. You don't have to like it but you shouldn't dismiss an artwork as 'shit' without a little research into the backstory. Wouldn't life be so boring if everything had to make sense to us on first impression denying us our purpose of investigating and learning." I agree. If you see something that doesn't immediately make sense you can walk away refusing to think about it or you can try and find some sense on it.

"Like cars, houses or anything else that has an intrinsic value placed on it. Things are only 'worth' what people are prepared to pay for it. In years to come, the works of Hirst and Emin *may* be assessed how art had lost it's way rather than how groundbreaking the individuals work was. Whatever is produced by the human psyche is always open to interpretation. Being popular isn't always good. Being controversial isn't always progressive. Like fab posts, if you don't like it move on. "

"Modern art is trash, if you have that famous name or the luck to be born into high society .... You can literally take a shit and sprinkle it with thousands and ones and call it art and recieve a payment ... .. " Well, that's cleared that up then. Very well researched argument put forward there. Thank you.

"The art world is governed by a bunch of cliquist pretentious twats. My point in question? The team that gave a chimpanzee a canvas and a load of paint. The resulting piece was hung in a gallery for the world's art critics to faun over, and my how they lauded it. And how hilarious it was watching them trying to back pedal when it's provenance was finally revealed. " I hear what you're saying. It's the 'arty' folk that bring all that pretentious shit to it. It's like they assume that someone who doesn't 'get it' is an idiot. I love art, or more so, what art is, but I avoid all that pretentious bullshit associated with it. If something moves me, then it moves me. Simple as. And while I'd say 90% of all the art I've seen in my life done absolutely nothing for me, I love that art of all kinds exist.

It's like they assume that someone who doesn't 'get it' is an idiot The art world is a very cliquey place, and can be very intimidating, and yes there are a few pretentious gits , like in any walk of life i suppose. when i started to investigate Art more in my twenties i started to get it and enjoy it more, the experience of deciphering/understanding made it more pleasurable. most art folk are open to questions, and willing to explain, it just takes some effort but once you get the bug and knowledge no-one can take that away from you. If you are interested in Cultural capital look up the work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu.
