Is the art of conversation dead?

...or do a lot of people think the rest of us are psychic.

I had a message (elsewhere, not on fab) that was comprised of a single word - the name of the town in which they lived - which, I already knew as this was information that they were already displaying.

Whilst not wishing to fall foul of forum rules with regard to the the discussion of messages, I am trying to be as vague as possible, whilst also trying to illustrate a point.

My point being that it seems that we, as a species, may be losing the ability to converse with one another, and at this rate, we'll be back to grunting as we did when we lived in caves.

How difficult is it for someone to string a couple of sentences together and actually get what they want to say into a single message.

Perhaps it's because some people struggle to understand how electronic messaging really works.

If you physically write a letter and post it, it may be a couple of days before it gets to it's destination, whereas if you pick up the phone, you are having a live conversation with the person at the other end.

Electronic messaging falls somewhere in between, and yet some, perhaps most people make the assumption that it is closer to the phone call than the letter.

But the truth is, that if you send a text, or a message, whilst it may arrive within seconds, you have no idea how long it is going to be until it is read - or even if it will be.

And there's no guarantee that it's got there.

So trying to use messaging in the same way you would a telephone is never going to work.

Hello OP, I thought I’d write you something, to show you I’ve read your post. I thought it was totally worthy of a reply and yes your quite right, we are not all able to read minds and we have became lazy with our communication skills.x

Manchester (she/her)

Some people are lazy and expect you to put in the effort. If you don't react in kind, they'll correct themselves or go away.

Alternatively, society has become more sophisticated. We now understand that "Manchester", in certain contexts, means "We live near each other, I'm giving you a bit of detail. Would you care to peruse my offering and see if you want to do the dirty with me?" Nuance is an advanced skill.

Absolutely. Can't understand why people don't chat more on here. It's so important to see if the things you like are in tune with the other person

Craggy Island

The problem with texting or messaging is people get distracted by what's around them instead of when being face to face focusing on the person in front and talking to them.

I think I am probably overly verbose in my conversations so I am not surprised I just get a few words back in response

Under the Duvet

I'm not here for endless chat, and make that quite clear.

I've got plenty of friends I can talk to;I'm on Fab for sex.

Unless I really like you,I'm not interested idle chit chat.

And that's the truth, Ruth.
