"Either... But total respect to those in caring industry... They're certainly shafted by their company's yet many would be lost without them" Professional carers are often shafted by their employers, working long hours for very low pay. Family carers are shafted by the government. Carers allowance is a tenner a week less than you get on the dole and you have to "work" full time looking after someone to qualify.

"Carers allowance is a fucking joke, as has been said- its less than dole for min 35 hours (less than £2 an hour ffs ) if the caree goes into hospital or respite for a week...we dont get it. And no free prescriptions or anything... But at least we dont show up on the 'unemployed' statistics. I dare even say that , like me, many carers are forced into the position too...is it any wonder i feel like jumping off a fucking bridge every morning.." It's definitely not a career choice for us! I didn't have a choice in becoming a live in carer for my mum. My twin sister lives over an hour's drive away and our other sister doesn't seem to care - she lives about 5 miles away and only visits once a week for about an hour. I contacted social services to try and arrange some respite care back in September so I could have a holiday. They promised to call me back within 4-6 weeks to see what they could do to help - I'm still waiting for them to call . My twin sister ended up taking a week off work unpaid to come and stay with mum so I could have a break. Whilst we are caring we have no opportunity to build up any savings or contribute to a pension because we just don't get enough money to even cover our basic needs. When we reach retirement age we will be among the poorest pensioners because we have sacrificed our future to care for our loved ones.

"I care for my mother ... well into her 90s now. I had to move in with her over a year ago because she wasn't coping. I do get support from professional carers but I fill in between. I also do paid work as the cost of care is rising. It also gives me a mental break. And then you get people on here who wonder why you can't accommodate, spend days and nights away or meet at the drop of a hat! And then you get blocked ... " I work part time too, I would have some sort of breakdown if I didn't. I always joke with people that I go to work for a rest but it's true. As much as I love my mum to bits I do need some time away from her. I put on my profile that I'm a live in carer, right at the beginning so it can't be missed. It may help you if you did something similar.

If people can't get it when I tell them then they probably aren't the sort of people I want to meet!

" It's definitely awful either way! I worked in care for 5 years before I started working in the NHS (not much better, but at least the pay's a bit fairer!)
