"Injury just before Christmas took a loooong time to get to a stage where I could run again. Building up slowly and steadily now to avoid any reoccurring issues. Slow and steady wins the race " Good to see you back And good to see you taking things slowly! Too many people jump straight back at the distance and speed they were doing before they got injured - then wonder why they are injured again!

"Been marathon training since beginning of december, got to 17.5 miles but now suffering with achilles problems, shin splint problems. Took 10 days off running, started Wednesday and all good, ran saturday and now have a groin problem and a hint of shin splint. Its really annoying" That's good discipline to take the time off, well done mate. For the shin splints thing, try a rolling pin (I posted on this on one of the other Fab Runners forum posts). It works wonders, honestly. Ask of you can't find the details or can't be arsed to search and I'll bore everyone again

" Do i strap the rolling pin to the side of my shin like a splint? " Use it as a massage device for a few minutes morning and night on the front and back of your calfs. Plus roll a tennis ball under your bare foot fit a few minutes.

"Hi all, I've been thinking about taking up running and possibly following the couch to 5k. There's a reservoir local to me so thought there would be a good place to go. So I'm just wondering has anyone got any pointers do's and don't?" You've got the right idea. C25K is perfect for beginners and you've got somewhere nice to run. Only other thing is don't under estimate the importance of a decent air of trainers

So I'm just wondering has anyone got any pointers do's and don't?" Be patient with yourself; DON'T overdo it; maybe don't even bother timing yourself until you get properly in to it - then you can start measuring your performance Also don't underestimate the power of rest. If you don't rest enough you'll injure yourself and be put off. Another thing, don't make excuses not to go out. Make a plan and stick to it Good luck!

"I started with couch to 5 k last October and could not run 100 metres. Next week I will finish the programme (delayed through injury and illness) but did my first park run last Saturday and ran all 5k in 33 minutes. Would highly recommend the programme, have enjoyed running so much I have a 10k run booked for early April. " Glad you enjoyed it and good luck for your 10k. "Thank you xx What trainers do u recommend- it’s a mine field n a new shopping experience " Sadly that's a very personal choice and depends on your gait plus weight plus intentions e.g. if you plan to run of road you'll do best with trail shoes, if you need a bit of cushioning that will take you down another route. I use Asics but they're more towards the high end so you probably wouldn't want to fork out for them to start with The best thing is, go to a running shop and get checked out. Then look at prices online and see if the shop price matches. Hope that helps

I buy most of my shoes online but it's a bit much to ask for a gait analysis and then leave to shop online.

Planned a rest day today and managed to go over on my ankle when I got distracted by a puppy and failed to notice a foot sized hole. The puppy thought the strange man lying in the floor was a great game though! Just back from A&E a probable sprain and an out patients appointment at the fracture clinic should it not be improving by Thursday. So that's well amd truly scuppered Friday's marathon (and possibly quite a bit more besides!)" Hope it is just a sprain and you're ok x

"Chuffed with myself. Plodded along for 3K last night. Massive milestone considering I was worrying about not walking again last summer. Going to invest in some better trainers this weekend. Need something that swallows up the impact. Not going to run on roads for the time being due to worry over the shins. " You might already have done this but getting gait analysis done and getting the correct running shoes for your style can work wonders. A lot of places offer this for free nowadays so you should easily find somewhere. I got out with my local running club last week for 4.5 miles of hill runs. Think i’m starting to get into running-finally...

"Went for a jog the other night which is something I don't normally do as I'm more used to football (jog run walk etc) but I want to lose some timber so thought I'd give it a go..only did 5k and there was some stop and starting as I just struggle with the constant running but too be honest I really enjoyed it, I put my headphones on music full blast hood up and just went for it and felt like I was in my own little world...my only issue I'm having at the moment is I've got a really sore left heel it's like the bit of bone that sticks put below the achillies tendon it's really sore after any type of running /football etc and causes me to.limp for a couple of days it's really annoying" Maybe go and get that seen to by a physio, it sounds a little like plantar fasciitis. If it is, it's easily solved but if left it will only get worse. I had it and I struggled to bear weight on the heel the day after running, simple stretches and a couple of exercises every day for a couple of weeks and it was sorted. Obviously I'm not a doctor and I can't tell much from what you've written, but if it's a recurrent problem, it's better to get it looked at

I just can't seen to do the long runs at the moment and I'm wondering if part of it is due to the cushioning going in the trainers or whether it is just down to lack of motivation? Or both?? In the back of my mind I am worried I will get my knee ache back again, so I am getting new trainers tomorrow " How many miles have they done?

"Really stupid question, which I think I already know the answer to, but I thought I'd ask. I bought my (rediciuosly) expensive trainers a year ago now. I just can't seen to do the long runs at the moment and I'm wondering if part of it is due to the cushioning going in the trainers or whether it is just down to lack of motivation? Or both?? In the back of my mind I am worried I will get my knee ache back again, so I am getting new trainers tomorrow How many miles have they done? Over the year? God knows!!! I average 10-15 miles a week at the moment" So could be 500 miles? The recommendation is to replace every 300-500 miles so it could be that the support has gone in them. That’s not a hard and fast rule though as I know people who have over 1,500 miles in a pair of shoes and still going strong. Take it easy in the new shoes to break them in and see if they make a difference

"Went for a jog the other night which is something I don't normally do as I'm more used to football (jog run walk etc) but I want to lose some timber so thought I'd give it a go..only did 5k and there was some stop and starting as I just struggle with the constant running but too be honest I really enjoyed it, I put my headphones on music full blast hood up and just went for it and felt like I was in my own little world...my only issue I'm having at the moment is I've got a really sore left heel it's like the bit of bone that sticks put below the achillies tendon it's really sore after any type of running /football etc and causes me to.limp for a couple of days it's really annoying Maybe go and get that seen to by a physio, it sounds a little like plantar fasciitis. If it is, it's easily solved but if left it will only get worse. I had it and I struggled to bear weight on the heel the day after running, simple stretches and a couple of exercises every day for a couple of weeks and it was sorted. Obviously I'm not a doctor and I can't tell much from what you've written, but if it's a recurrent problem, it's better to get it looked at " Cheers pal thanks for the advice

"Morning folks, it's been a while! I thoroughly lost my running mojo the last few months and after a few attempts to find it I just didn't run for a bit. However on Monday I got back out, my fitness is nowhere near what it was but as a starting point it's better than I thought. I managed 6.2 km and I'm going to head out again tonight for the same. It's a little demoralising when I think that only 4 months ago I ran my first marathon but mental health comes first. I hope that everyone is doing well, I'll catch up with the thread in a bit. Sorry about the essay! " Good to see you back

"Hi new crap runner here. Been stop start to resuming running due to ongoing calf injuries. Physio has got to the heart of the issue, and following his advice, I'm ready to start pounding the streets. Long term aim is to run home from work (7 miles), three or four times a week. " Welcome!

"Chuffed with myself. Plodded along for 3K last night. Massive milestone considering I was worrying about not walking again last summer. Going to invest in some better trainers this weekend. Need something that swallows up the impact. Not going to run on roads for the time being due to worry over the shins. " Well done on getting out there!

"Anyone ever get a migrane after running? I felt awful last night after my first c25k run Miss s x" Hydration. Was always told if your trying to hydrate on the day of the run it’s too late. Get your hydration levels up, and probably the day before.

"At last I find a Runners post. I’m a 10k runner who’s lost his mojo. Real drag going out for a run, but I’m still going as I know I’ll get over it. Times for parkrun getting slower not faster Shot me I’m an old horse. " 6 weeks away from a marathon, and last 2 weeks have been tough, and lost motivation too. I think we all go through those stages. I just dropped down to doing some fun stuff and not worrying about times and hitting the plan. Feeling better again about the running.

Normally love my running but I've had so much going on lately....." It's very hard to find time for yourself when life around you is so busy, I often run straight after work before I go home as I know once I'm home other things become a priority

"Sitting here with a ciggie in hand thinking I should really start somewhere. (Putting the flag out would help). A brisk walk for me might be a good start I look at the running machines in the gym but tend to say clear. Maybe I'll give them a go. " The best advice I can give is to try couch to 5k, either from free app or a local running club. I did most of my c25k on the treadmill as I was too self conscience about running in public but once you can run a few miles that confidence builds up
