Dodgy email

I saw something about this before but can’t find it. I don’t usually bother with these things but I’ve had an email saying they know my password and it is my password . It mentions about a sex site etc but the password isn’t the one for here, it’s my Apple ID password. Says to pay money blah blah or they’ll send stuff to all my contacts including me on webcam. I’ve never ever done webcam so not worried about that and I’m obviously sending no money but how has this happened and is it possible they have personal stuff from my phone? Any ideas?

Not sure how they get the apple password but it is a well publicised scam, in fact I'm sure there have been threads on it before but god knows how to find them, just ignore it.

Try the website pwned.. it lists if your email is or has been compromised through a data hack..

the email I use for here (its one I use for spam and never reference) was compromised in a data hack along with 700 million others , my personal email hasn't been (as yet)

It’s weird coz it’s not the email I use for here either. But it mentions a sex site! It’s my personal email which isn’t linked to here.

I would guess that they don't know you're on here but enough people have been on a site that they would feel embarrassed about if their neighbours knew makes it a good gamble. Send it to enough people and there'll be someone who's been on pornhub or whatever to break out and pay up.

Change your passwords, don't worry

I know and I’m always getting eBay/bank ones etc that I ignore but it’s the fact they’ve got my password and it’s not really an easy one to work out.

Chances are your email and other details were compromised in a bigger data breach wasn't there a hotel chain not long ago that had a massive hack credit card details etc, try pwned see if its compromised, sex site who knows might just be a stab in the dark statistically most will have visited and its just a barnum statement

Nora its a scam. My dad had it and its a well known scam thats been going about for a while.

Loads of sites got hacked and peoples info got sold on so thats how they know your name/email/password. Its actually got nothing to do with sex sites they use that in the hope it will shame people in to paying the money they demand.

I get these emails everyday. Just delete.

The most common one I get is AppleID and I have never owned an Apple product. Recently I started getting emails from Amazon about an order I made that doesn't exist.

Don’t panic

Change your passwords for all your accounts at lease affected by this including Apple ID and Fab.

Never use the same password twice nor similar ones

Always recommend minimum of 14 characters - don’t need upper and lower case bollocks- think of it as two or three words that no one will think of eg swingersarethebest

Recommend using a password manager.

Never pay any money/ignore the maniacs that do this
