Unfortunately the elephant will probably be extinct in the wild in the next few decades.

It's pretty much inevitable at the present rate of slaughter.

Tough choices ahead.

Unfortunately this is everything that is wrong with the world. The Chinese are far worse by eating and killing everything into extinction. They are on their way into wiping out all the sharks through "finning" and very close to finnishing off all the whales.

It's all down to making money. As their are fewer in the land and sea the prices to buy and kill goes up and this becomes more desirable for hunters and poachers.

All that happens is heavy fines at best. Their should be a death penalty to make the risk not worth it. But even that won't do any good.

Under the Duvet

As long as animals are seen as a thing, as a commodity for humans to use as they wish then things will never change.

You can choose to ignore the link between the slaughter of millions if animals daily so we can have our chicken nuggets and bacon sandwiches, and the mentality of someone who pays to shoot rare animals but they are just different sides off the same coin.

I'm not vegetarian but I'm feeling more and more uncomfortable with our treatment of animals.

And that's all animals, not just the ones we think are cute or rare.

If I were absolutely filthy rich, I'd spend a fortune to travel the world to track these rare creatures down... But only to get the chance to see them in the wild with my own eyes. Why would anyone wish to end it's life?

I understand that there are instances where population control has to happen (and as unfortunate as that is, it really is necessary) but allowing rare species to be hunted for pleasure?... Damn! I really wish I hadn't read this now

Indeed. I see no moral difference between animals being killed for food animals being killed by hunters. Its all for human pleasure.

King's lynn

A lot of the big game ranches in South Africa are keeping conservation going by allowing controlled shooting.

This helps fund the project, say you have a herd of wildebeest, lions whatever, you watch them, you see which one is old or weak and is going to die through natural causes, maybe too many young male animals which threaten the herd, they then take out a paying gun to cull the animal.

Now I am not condoning this, just saying a lot of the times we are only being fed a small amount of headline to get us into the story when in actual fact we know nowt.

Moral high ground is a dangerous thing, I prefer to get all the facts, true facts before I make judgement.

Did you know that Carrots scream when your boiling them, it’s awful, poor things, pulled from the ground, separated from the family and either cut into tiny pieces or boiled! Now I don’t think that’s true for a second, but yet someone could jump on that and threaten farmers etc.

One thing that a gent said earlier in this post and I completely agree with him, the world is fucked. Our race has the intelligence to do good, to live well but yet has the propensity, the destiny to fk it up for everyone.

It’s a crying shame what is happening all over this beautiful planet by human damage and greed.

I totally agree that hunting should be allowed, however on a level playing field.

Hunters get dropped off by helicopter in the home environment of the animal they wish to hunt, naked, and armed with nothing more than their teeth, nails and "Superior brain".

They can use whatever they want from the natural surroundings to fashion weapons but cannot use any assistance from anything made in the last 10,000 years.

Because they are so evolved, I'm sure they won't have any issue hunting lions and elephants with a broken branch...

Agree with _lyreel Most people looking from the outside would be shocked at hunting but there’s more to it.

I’m from Zim, still have connections with people in wildlife sector. The hunting isn’t random. The National Parks issue annual licenses on an auction basis, it’s very limited numbers to keep the value high. Nat Parks are desperate for money.

Meanwhile, there’s limited space to sustain a population of animals so those in the industry have to manage animal numbers. If they don’t the whole eco system collapses. They do try to catch and move animals to other parts of the country or to neighbours.

They know that a certain amount need to be culled so rather than the wardens shooting them it’s better to get income from it.

We don’t have to agree with it and even though I grew up visiting parks it’s something I’m uneasy with. But I’m also a realist and know how vital it is as part of the whole wildlife program

So again, limiting finances enables the wealthy to do what they want? Doesn't really seem like a good enough excuse for allowing hunting.

Reinroducing wolves to Jellystone gave a good example of how you don't have to kill anything to change the eco system in a positive way.

It’s easy for us in the UK to take this stance isn’t it? Imagine if our rivers were full of crocs and hippos. Elephants destroying farms and raiding villages. Not being able to walk in the country without worrying about lions etc

The pressure of balancing wildlife against needs of the population is difficult.

Not really, there's many villages where the crocodiles live and don't attack humansbecause they've learned how to live with them.

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=village+crocodiles+and+people+liveogether

Same with lions and that.

We've been told a lot of lies about animals, that they are stupid (yeah many pets are because their owners trained them to be that way by being stupid themselvesor neglectful), that they're not sentient (because we wouldn't eat them if we knew they were, neither would we keep them as pets), self aware.

I think the western world in general is so focused on profit, rather than need, that we have fucked up big time.

And if they hadn't moved indigneous people out of their villages to make animal 'reserves' then nobody would need money to preserve them.

Because these reserves spring up where there is a large amount of the endangered species left, and they still existed in copious amounts because the villagers have always lived with them and didn't approve of hunting and were vegetarian so had no need to kill them at all.

You do know there allowed to shoot the animals as part if conservation. Let them pick off the weak and old and make them pay. All money made is then put back into the conservation project they've been allowed to hunt on. Maybe look into it more before jumping the gun. If these places don't make money then they cant pay to protect the animals

Ironic that the countries that do the most to retain wildlife get criticised by people in countries which have wiped out numerous species.

If there’s an idiot prepared to pay fifty grand to shoot an elephant it’s difficult for struggling countries to turn it down.

The positive things we can do to help is keep pressure on those in the East that encourage poaching - they wipe out thousands of animals with no benefit to African countries. And if more people visited the countries and parks the income would eliminate the need to sell shooting licenses.

It's a very simple but sad fact. The human race is appalling. Yes I know there's good people and all that ... but as a race we are appalling. At the current rate of population growth, we WILL ensure the end of life on this planet - it really is that simple if you bother to research it. Unfortunately, we don't address the real problem - population growth - because we are too busy concentrating on shit that don't matter.

Yes. Did you see last nights ‘Africa with Ade Adepitan’ on BBC2. Was in Tanzania. World Wildlife reckon 20,000 elephants get poached every year which is the real problem, not the odd one which gets hunted - although why anyone wants to shoot one is beyond me.

And they reckon Tanzania’s population will double by 2050, so the pressure on wildlife will increase. They did a clip showing the impact elephants have on local farmer crops too.

They don't always kill them, sometimes only remove a limb or two.

Cannibalism happens in the poor areas also, people are starving but gangs tend to kill their 'enemies' and eat them.
