No it’s 1.99 for first week. Over all cast will be about £1500 and by the time you have half it built you will find it hard to get any editions unless you pre order and pre pay through the publishers

It stands to reason some people must buy them even at an exorbitant cost we life in a I want culture these days and lots of people don't think rationally if they want something.

My dad did once. Until I showed him that you could buy the equivalent sized plastic model kit to build and paint for around 1/5th the cost.

It's a slick marketing ploy - they work on the premise that loads of people will see the ad and buy the first edition at £1.99, and probably the second at £4.99 and people will then start to drop off after seeing the £8.99 price for subsequent editions but by then they've made their money and have minimal costs for anyone that does stick it out to the end.

Just looked at a few examples and the actual cost of completing these things is between £800 and £1300!! Add to that that you have to wait for the next part to drop through your letterbox each week, over a total of usually between 100-130 weeks, and only the most dedicated (and some would say stupid) would actually complete these things.

By comparison you can go to any decent model shop, buy the whole kit in one go and expect to pay around £100-£150.

I remember my son when he was a kid doing a robot under one of these schemes, and half the parts were ill fitting, poor quality and didn't work either.

I did sign up for the art of crochet part work when it first came out. I lasted a few months then stopped.

When I was a kid my mum had a knitting one and a recipe one. Each one she ended up with about 5 large binders of patterns/recipes. They’ve stood the test of time though, my elder sister has got the recipe binders and mum still has the knitting patterns which my other sister uses sometimes

Heard this on radio two.. Loved that they said it takes longer to build model than she was actually at sea... Just buy airfix, one cheapish payment, job done. A while back they did build a spitfire, end total was over £1500 and year and a half... For less than that you could actually go up in a two seater spit
