How the heck was that invented?

Stuff we perhaps take for granted, but somewhere down the line someone had to be the first to have tried it?

E.g. cooked meat on a fire?

Frantically wore their wrist out spanking the monkey

What other odd practices can you think of, which must have taken ingenuity to be the first ever to have tried?

Aquafaba. I was surprised at that one too.

Velcro... and the possibly apocryphal design coming from pubic hair.

The vibrator. Who had the first inclination to put a vibrating length of plastic/rubber inside their body? Infact, all sex toys. Were they invented by people with boring sex lives?

ok there seems to be some interest in the chick pea juice ,

as they hold a lot of protein when cooked the protein goes into the water , just drain them whip the juice like egg white, sugar can be added , they are bake stable too, or can be used in mousses etc

There and to the left a bit

Having watched a programme about how cheese is made last night - which included the use of sheep gut to make rennet, which is a key part of cheese production and is what makes the curdled milk set into what becomes cheese - I actually asked who on earth thought to do that in the first place - I mean it's not the most logical of steps now is it?

I know, I'll just throw some extract of sheep innards into this milk and see what happens!!

Actually here's one I know the answer to - post-it notes were the result of a failed experiment to invent a new kind of glue - when they realised it didn't stick solid someone had the bright idea of applying it to paper that could be peeled off, and stuck onto, any surface.

When you're truly starving, you'll give anything a go. Roast chicken as a starter though

"milk"

Really interesting one.

All humans were Lactose Intolerant until relatively recently in Evolutionary terms. It was a successful genetic mutation around 8,000 BC which later became prevalent.

This was around the time humans had started settling down and growing Emmer Wheat. The beginning of Farming and settled communities.

It meant their domestication of livestock (for meat) took a new direction when Goat and Sheep Milk started being used to make Cheese. They used the Rennet from the animal's stomach to kick off the Cheese process. The drinking of Milk is actually much more recent. There are still plenty of areas on the planet where people cannot drink Cow's Milk because genetically they are unable to.

That use of Milk to make Cheese and Butter started in the Near East. It was an incredibly "utter genius" way of preserving the brilliant bacteria, the nutritious fats and fullsome flavours for the leaner Winter-ish months. All that originated in the Cradle of Civilsation which the US and Israel have tried bombing back to the Stone Age... Iraq, Syria and Eastern Turkey. Northern Iran too.

They invented Cheese. Brilliant!

Smoking. Who thought it would be a good idea to dry a leaf, set fire to it and inhale the smoke?

I always wonder who had the idea of grinding grain to make flour then mixing it with yeast and water and baking it.
