The word "discreet"

It really grinds my gears...

We get lots of messages from guys telling us they are "discreet" as if it's a selling point. Given that it's bloody obvious none of us are going around having group sex in public, to us it means only one of two things

1. I'm a bit thick and don't really think about what I write, but I have seen lots of other people saying they are discreet, so it must be a good thing.

2. It's a euphemism for cheating and paranoid and I'll turn up for a meeting in dark glasses, hat and false beard.

Or maybe they want to keep their fab life totally separate from real life, or perhaps they have a job they want to keep it from, or yes perhaps they are not single. Don’t see the issue with it to be honest.

Menston near Ilkley

I think people would be worried if they thought a guy might be indiscreet and told all and sundry about what went on between them?

My point is that being discreet goes without saying. We're all discreet.

Hence using it as a selling point suggests stupidity or paranoia.

Agree it does go without saying for most of us.

Overuse of it makes me suspicious

Especially of no pics, can't accom etc.

I agree that it should be a given and that for many it will go without saying, but then respect and being genuine also should be a given and often seem lacking. Perhaps highlighting those qualities isn't such a bad thing after all...

It's the whole "protesting too much" thing. If you feel the need to emphasise you are genuine and discreet, people will begin to suspect you're not...

I see a lot of posts on here I'd consider indiscreet, so it's not necessarily about the persons personal situation it could be about how they conduct themselves.

By "posts on here" I mean the whole forum not just this thread.

It's a pointless word on here. It should go without saying. The same as genuine.

I would assume that everyone is discreet unless they declare they are open about their lifestyle.

Someone who is open about being a swinger is not neccesarily going to "out" everyone they have met.

In short, it means as much as the legal disclaimer.

Discreet means under the radar or careful, discrete means individual or detached...

I take your point, and yes emphasisising it can seem a little odd; like sending a message stating you won't assault them...I naturally assumed that?

But I guess it's a harmless reassurance in my book? I once had a social with a couple in a pub where the male was openly talking graphically about sex acts and what I should do with his partner upstairs, whilst we sat in a crowded bar. That's the type of discretion I refer to and expect?

Some folk approach the whole site with a very blase, I don't care who knows attitude, whereas I'd rather keep the sexual activity to the bedroom, and outside it's about subtle titillation and good conversation to attract eachother.

Indeed ... so either could be used depending on the user's context

What does discreet mean though?

Lots of people have public face pics so everyone local probably knows they are a swinger.

People have sex veris showing on their profile so we know who they fucked.. and can follow their veri trail to see who that next person fucked... like a big sex pyramid.
