Ash. Sat Navs? I don't rely on them, instead use maps. My first career choice was to be a Cartographer and I spent 2 weeks away from school on work experience in Bartholomew's Maps in Edinburgh. Sadly, my poor eyesight proved a major handicap. But I can "read" a map like anyone else reads a book.

Sadly the art of map reading is an old skill that is slowly ending due to modern technology.

I learnt map reading as a Boy Scout - the main benefit I found was that there were lots of easy marks to be had on the Common Entrance Geography exam if you knew the difference between a church with spire and church with tower

Or in outdoor pursuits or hobbies, knowing OS Maps and linked symbols, terrain markers etc, was beneficial.

Very specialised, out of my depth. Is that using cranes, or smaller equipment? Like a lot of HSE stuff, it comes down to basic common sense.

Reminds me once of a bias of mine who'd hired a crane in to move 6 Portakabin offices around our site; simple stuff, mainly turning them round by 90 degrees to fit into an area better. But one had to be moved further and the crane operator stated he couldn't do so as A) the cranes safety limits vs reach would be exceeded and B) it would mean lifting under High Voltage Power Lines which risked Arcing! So he refused to do that one lift.

Cue my boss, who never accepted the word 'No' and yelled to me, "Call this cretin's guv'nor & get a proper trained monkey in!"

Cue us, restraining the crane driver wanting to punch 7 bells outta my boss!
