How did vaping become normalised so fast ?

What are you doing, you are sucking on flavoured water and blowing steam into the air like that’s okay!

What weird things are considered normal and what normal things are considered weird ?!

Are vapers still classed as smokers here?

Is there a "won't meet vapers" option?

"Are vapers still classed as smokers here?

There's a thread running about vaping in the feedback forum that might answer those questions.

I think the fact that it is seen as an alternative to smoking, that has yet to be proven to be harmful to your health, is a lot cheaper, and yet replicates some of the habitual nature of smoking accounts for its rapid rise - it's kept me off the fags for almost 3 years now, and I'm grateful to it's availability for that alone

I'm glad vaping helps people. As someone who often reacts badly to it, though, it does bother me when many people say "oh it's not smoking so it's fine". I know someone who "didn't smoke" and would come home a few times a week reeking of a whole bottle of perfume with hints of nicotine. Now she vapes, and I'm not sure she puts the damn thing down to sleep. But it's not inconsiderate to fill the air with vapour because it's not smoking, apparently. (and I'm the one with a problem when I'm driven from the room by it before I get sick) This attitude keeps playing out, and it drives me mad.

I don't want to stop anyone vaping, I just wish that people were half as considerate as they are (forced to be) with cigarettes.

You pluck out the bits that don't belong (in the same way a man might shape a moustache) and fill in the bald bits. Otherwise it looks daft!

To be fair that's the attitude of the person, and lack of consideration on their part, playing out rather than the vape being at fault - I'm fully aware that people no more want clouds of vape blown in their face than they do clouds of smoke and try to be aware of that fact when I vape and ensure it doesn't happen as much as I can.

Whilst vape is not as harmful as cigarette smoke, nor does it smell as awfully, I also appreciate that to some it's an irritant and therefore adopt the same considerations as I used to when smoking.

More power to considerate vapers, Gemini Man, I mean that sincerely. But I think there's a broader societal (re)adjustment that's needed, you know? If you're the one adding unusual things to the air, it's on you. (and this person is by far the worst in my life, but I do get it a lot, including here. No, I don't want to be around it, obviously I'm pro smoking or a fascist or a lunatic. Rather than, you know, wanting to minimise known irritants)

There is also the usual "it's harmless" comment. It's still such a new phenomenon that no one knows any potential long term effects.

Smoking until the mid to late 20th century was considered harmless.

You could say that about almost anything until it is *proven* harmful though - all I know is my GP encouraged me to continue vaping if it keeps me off the cigarettes and he's the one that told me that *all* studies conducted so far have found absolutely no damage caused by it.

Now, down the road if it comes to light that there is some harm to it, then I'll re-assess, same as I would with anything else, until then though I'll consider it harmless. It is at the end of the day just effectively inhaling flavoured steam.

I feel about vaping the way I do about, say, if I were incredibly allergic to peanuts (I'm not). Eat the peanuts! Go nuts (I actually didn't intend that pun, oops ). Just keep it away from me, because you can not eat peanuts around me, but my reaction is something I can't help.

Because people earn money from it, so it gets advertised and pushed on us. It's also supposedly better for us than smoking cigarettes.

I wouldn’t say it’s normalised quickly. 10 years I’ve been using a ecig, back then it looked like a cigarette with a little red light on the end that lit up when you took a draw. Not many people had seen them back then, and I was often asked what it was.

I'm sure it won't be too long before they discover all the chemicals are an even faster track to cancer than cigarettes were.

Well if that's the case we're all doomed as most flavourings they use in vape juice are used in a whole host of other things too

In fact having just looked at my bottle of vape juice I'll go a step further and say *all* the ingredients used are used in a whole load of other things too from skincare to food production."

Well the key differnce is you have little cilla in your air ways.

Vaping has already proved to damage these (far less thsn smoking but still) one of the causes of cancer in smokers is when the body replaces all these cillia cells with tougher smoother ones its a big "construction project" and mistakes can occur which leads to cancer.

"I read the OP as, 20 years ago someone walking around sucking on a tube and blowing steam everywhere would have been weirder than someone riding a unicycle. Now it's everywhere. (not, vapers are weird, but, it's a thing you used to not see) "

Well pipes were popular once ...

Vapes got me off a seriously bad smoking habit and yes I'm a responsible vaper in the company of others and don't use flavoured vapes so no significant oder. I also don't use the steam gushing fashion vapes. Not the best solution for getting off tobacco but one that worked for me.

"I'm glad vaping helps people. "I don't think it is accepted as normal anyway, just a darn sight better than smoking."

It’s incredible annoying, Even more annoying when it’s a hipster doing it.

"What are you doing, you are sucking on flavoured water and blowing steam into the air like that’s okay!

What weird things are considered normal and what normal things are considered weird ?!

Sheep there all sheep...

It going to end up be poisonous but as long as the man is getting paid all good.. "

I've a feeling the anti vapers would be delighted

"More power to considerate vapers, Gemini Man, I mean that sincerely. Rather than, you know, wanting to minimise known irritants) "

Which irritant?

I don't know specifically. I do know that vaping makes me feel ill, so I ask that people do it away from me, and if they don't, I leave.

I can't see why it matters. I'm managing my health.

Vaping is manky

Not as manky as fags but still manky - but it did help me give up smoking and then I gave up vaping - because it is weird - not forgetting manky!

I think social media is weird.

Some people say Fab is social media but if it wasn't for Fab I would probably live like a sexless nun

Bragbook and Twatter etc just feed the ego and waste your time.

You don't even get to orgasm - so I don't see the point

So let's get this clear ... it's manky?

I find it irritating, clouds of sickly sweet puffs and adults sucking on it like a dunny!

My friend vapes waaaaay more than she ever smoked - basically replacing one addiction with another..

Yeah, this concerns me too with the woman I mentioned above. At some point, does a small number of cigarettes become better than "I never put this down"?

Just you said known irritants I presumed you were aware of the irritant and wondered which component of vapour had an effect.

It doesn’t decrease her addiction to nicotine but does reduce the harm from the method of delivery... possible increase in addiction to nicotine but without the significant known harm from cigarette smoke
