An Mot at the doctors

Sat with friends who are older than I, and they all mention having a health check when they were 40yrs old. I never got that memo, and certainly never thought I needed one.

So I’m checked in today for blood tests apparently to see how healthy/unhealthy I am.

Is this a thing? Or have I been set up to worry me, as I’m now stupidly thinking I might get told to be more healthy, as this is something I’ve never had to do. I live life recklessly with my diet and think I’m bulletproof. But now I feel old needing this health check.

Does everyone have this checkup, and have you had anything found that your weren’t aware of?

I had one few months back ( im 50) i think anywhere from 45 upwards as i said i was 50. I know someone who got a letter at 56

Go for it, as it’s one of the highest killers amongst men. You can if your not up for the physical a poo test for screening.

I usually post silly stuff in forum: this isn’t silly though.

I’ve lost close relatives on both paternal and maternal side: you better believe a blood test and a finger up the bum now and again is nothing compared to the possible alternative.

It’s been scientifically* proven that women are 10 times more likely to sleep with a guy over 45 if he’s had his prostrate checked out by a doctor.

*its not but it should be

Hi Kelly - you’ve also passed your latest visual inspection with flying colours .

Being serious though - it all sounds perfectly normal. Every practice does things a bit differently though, I think.

Try to see it as a good thing - reassuring and supportive.

I have to now, although I did do regular check ups, I am in hospital once a month for a check up, this is due to cancer..

But I would recommend you getting checked over once a year, also ask when they take blood to test for psa

I had a check up a few years ago (blood pressure etc) and i mentioned my weight to my Dr (get in first i thought). He just shrugged and said not everyone is mean’t to be slim, genetics etc.

Told me all the tests were fine and that was it.

Haven’t been since. Moved and changed Dr’s and the waiting lists with this lot are terrible.

I think that you should go for a check up. They could detect something now that could be an issue in the future. You could make lifestyle changes now that could potentially save you a heap of health issues in years to come.

I’m 52 and wish I’d had that opportunity. I’d definitely have done something about it.

I have a mammogram appointment this morning, an invite for screening which is a bit scary if I’m honest but surely the alternative is worse. I figure it’s worth having my boobies flattened for a few minutes for peace of mind. No one likes to be made aware of their own mortality but if there are things silently ticking away under the surface surely it’s better to know early. High Blood pressure and diabetes type 2 for example are prevalent in middle age, largely silent in the initial stages but can do so much damage long term. If you’re diagnosed early you have the control to do something, maybe small diet changes etc. Get checked I say

I go for my mammogram and smear appointments and do the bowel cancer screening bi yearly. I don't go for the health check at the doctor's though. I don't feel it's necessary for me as I have yearly blood tests anyway and I think too much screening can cause anxiety.

I think it must vary by local health authority as (at 53) I've not had an official invite for a check - that said periodically my Doc will do a general basic check (height, weight, blood pressure etc) when I visit for anything else

Everyone I know who has been for these checks comes away being offered statins. I’m starting to wonder if they are funded by the drug companies who make them!

At mine I was told I had elevated cholesterol and needed statins and when I refused I was referred to the hospital instead. The consultant I saw yesterday said they had wasted his time. I have an under active thyroid and apparently that can screw up cholesterol tests. He said he sees so many people who have been told they need statins after these health checks, when in fact, they don’t

If your pondering because you have any of the common symptoms then do it, I would still do it at that age..

I am on meds for mine, I think like breast and cervical screening it should be an NHS age triggered programme for testing men too..

I do them. It an NHS health check. Worth having if your not a regular to your gp. They basically show if you're at risk of diabetes and heart problems and can discuss and help with smoking diet and weight loss. K
