Many councils only count homeless that are actually laying down..ie stood up or hidden away not counted.soup kitchens have a better idea but the councils wont of course use their figures | |||

In that time their issues are identified and resolved. Any drug and alcohol issues, debt managment. Employment etc. Also in that time the local authority has time to find suitable accomodation for their release. If they fail to do so are heavily fined. Any housing benefit gows straight to landlord. Any benefits is managed through some sort of support worker to help manage their money better. Weekly drug and alcohol test with a 1 month prison sentence for continuous fails. Harsh I know but I've been on the streets myself, this time of year also. And the above sounds like heaven compared to the streets. Most people on the street need taking care of, they're not to doing it themselves. They detoxing and educating about money managment and life skills. They need taking of the street and placed somewhere for a few months to deal with the ussues that have brought them to the streets in the first place. Ok, maybe not arrested and charged. But there should be a programme in place like that... " Very few homeless people actually sleep out on the streets - the majority are sofa surfing, sleeping in their car, in temporary accommodation etc. Not all those who are sleeping out are using drugs and/or alcohol either. You are advocating treating people as criminals when all they actually need is help because they are down on their luck! How is the prison system supposed to cope with these new inmates? Drugs are easily available in prisons anyway and they are already struggling to cope and are overcrowded. | |||

I'm saying street homeless should be taken off the streets and helped. The majority of street homeless have addiction issues. The ones with addiction issues spend every penny on drugs. That is they're priority. They need to be taken if need be forcefully taken and helped. They won't do it themselves. When they go to voluntree rehabs they can just walk out. I'm talking about the ones with drug, alcohol, gambling issues. I did say people without those don't stay on the street long. It's not hard to get off the street it's staying off the streets is the hardest. They've had accommodation and lost it... why? The local authorities now have the duty to house anyone street homeless. Some street homeless get this help and mess it up due to their addiction. Taking drugs/alcohol in hostels or B&Bs they've been put. Not paying rent and bills. Hostels ban people if they break the rules. Before you can house an addict you need to address the issues first. Or it's just one big cycle that's costing a fortune. Use that money to create lockdown rehabs and counselling centres. | |||

We never had any at our stations or high streets, now there's a few every night and Romford has loads in the summer. | |||

If you were destitute and ended up on the street would you turn down free shoes, socks, pants etc? I know people who work for homeless charities and they don't all end up on the street because they are junkies or alcoholics. Some end up on drugs or drinking heavily because of being on the street and it being a better option than killing themselves . | |||

We do but we also have the duty to help people who need it. The system we have now is helping no one. Too soft. Need to be cruel to be kind. It'll be tough and seem unfair. But I guarantee they'll be thankful for it once they're drug free. Also they should change the rules that only your local can house you. Meaning you must have ties to that area, family etc. Putting an ex addict back in the town they were addicts is dangerous. They should be allowed to move somewhere new to create a better life not go back to were there's bad influences. | |||

They could if they address the problems with Universal Credit and wasting money giving addicts benefits. 98% of a homeless addicts benefit will go on drugs. The other 2% is for the phone box! There is plenty of money to tackle this problem, it's just being spent in the wrong places. | |||
