Some of our chippies use the white paper from the catering suppliers instead of the polystyrene boxes (horrible)

Can't beat sharing a bag of chips with your other half as you walking together

I'm not sure, but wasn't it back in the late '60's or early 70's?

I think that some still use newsprint paper (unused) which is very clean and usually sterile enough to use for an emergency bandage...

But apparently actual newspapers have been handled so much that they are totaly unfit to eat off, plus I think that the ink doesn't do you a lot of good!

I still miss eating chips out of a newspaper though!

I'm only 23 and remember chips in newspaper when I was a kid so it can't have been that long ago. Maybe us Northerners were fine with a bit of muck for a bit longer!

Even better than the newspaper was the scraps you got, you got them free if you bought chips but i think they where something like 2p if you went in and just asked for a bag of scraps

It probably accounted for the shitty tabloids higher sales figures.

Must admit though eating outta newspaper soddened with vinegar tasted divine.

I'm sure the Whetherby Whaler still use old style paper to wrap their fodder in.

Now that is a chippy worth popping in if you're in the Tadcaster/York/Wetherby Areas.

After every Cardiff social, a bunch of us trot over to a place called "chippie alley" in the town centre(ish), its a small side street where every shop is a takeaway of sorts. you can get everything from pizza to burgers to kebabs to standard good old fish'n'chips.

We dont all get the same, but those with chips wrapped in the catering paper tend to be the ones defending their suppers (or early breakfasts, as its usually silly o'clock A.M. lol!)

Very rare you get a good chippie these days.

I was down in Hastings in 1996 when my gran was dying, unfortunately died (for me, not for her) for about a week.

I tell you there was, hopefully still is a fish and chip shop, down on the beach.

Cod freshly caught, beautifully flaky, the batter golden crisp, chips divine, had them every day. Not a hint of greasiness.

The owner only cooked his fish and chips separately, made his own batter with hint of curry powder and only cooked them in lard. Not for the taste but for the temperature, vegetable oil has too low smoke point.

Still get them wrapped in newspaper (outer wrappings)from my local chippy. Fresh caught fish, hand peeled potatoes, absolute heaven...... and on a Sunday morning the chippy is open to sell the Sunday papers and rolls.

Some still do but not in "used" paper it has to be spoilt over runs for hygiene reasons.

Bit of a pisser though cause you can still buy a burger from van served to you by a man with piss and snot on his hands.

that's why i will only buy fish and chips from a traditional chippy

i will eat chips from a chinese chippy and then pretty much only the chinese food

to me, the fish batter always picks up the flavours of the other things that have been deep fried in the oil and it's just not the same

same as with takeaways that sell everything from burgers, kebabs, fried chicken etc. they're not traditional chippies, they are masquerading !

I can remember as a kid filling my dolls pram with newspapers and taking them down the road to the local chippy.

Fruday night was chippy night and I used to push my pram in, dump the papers in a corner, no mean feat at age 5. My hand would go up the counter with Mum's order and the correct money, but when I took the papers, my chips were free and Fred told me to put the money in my money box.

I always remember being proud when I could see over the counter. I was always promised that when I could I would get to operate the chipper. Only prob was I wasn't strong enough to do it lol
