I went to varadero nearly 18 years ago with friends, loved it then as it wasn’t as commercialised as most of the other Caribbean islands, would love to go back one day

Its ok though still a little rustic but its nearer to Havana than the Holguin area and a trip to Havana is a must.

I’m off to the Royalton hicacos in Varadero first 2 weeks of July, are there any good bars and restaurants outside of the hotels?

It's a great place for simplicity - if you want to unwide, enjoy the weather, beach, your resort and the company. I spent the best part of a month in Cuba, including a week at Varadero: I encourage you to see and explore more of the country, including a variety of city/rural/beach environments. We had an all-inclusive hotel, which is common and it worked well.
