IF oil is found in the Falklands

Jump to newest

At least one potential major oilfield has been discovered in the waters around the Falklands.

I am not sure about the international legalities, and putting aside the claims of Argentina for the moment; if commercially viable oilfields are discovered and tapped, I presume the Falkland Islanders and the oil companies will share the revenue.

Bearing in mind the billions of pounds (and soldiers' lives) we British taxpayers have spent protecting the islands, should the we expect a decent payback?

That's the Argies payback for the Falklands.

There's quite a quantity of oil been found down there and hope for more too. We should with no warning bomb Argentina before they try it on, it's the only reasonable option. Capture military targets such as the fray bentos factories and punish them for crimes against humanity.

Indeed, that is why I am asking whether people think the UK would / should get a cut of the oil revenue if it comes on-stream. Payback for the fortune we have spent on the place.

Don't be daft.

You should bomb the Gaucho hat factories. They would then have to import those big sombreros from Mexico. Chaos ensues.

As I understand it all the revenue would come to the UK but presumably the UK budget allocation to the Falklands would subsequently be increased, although not for the full amount

You know what this means don't you. It means we can have one of those big posh hotel thingies they have in Dubai and we'll all be able to afford a Mercedes.

Good times ahead folks, and conventional ring pull tins for dodgy meat, no more A&E.

That is what I wonder about. How much would be remitted to the Islands and how much held back to pay for all the money we have spent on the place.

All I know is, I bet at the end of the day the only people happy with the final arrangements will be the oil executives.

Theres no if we find oil, I remember it being reported last year....

And in the Autumn there was talk of Argentina pushing for reclamation once again...

I said to a friend at the time- theres a surprise!

I also said that it will be interesting seeing how easily accessible the oil is and whether it will be cost effective to retrieve it, bet it will otherwise it wouldn't have been publicised that it had been found- in British waters.

Oil plus strategic position- same reason UK keeps Pitcairn, St Helena, Ascension Island, Tristan de Cunha etc.

But for Falklands its mainly oil and anything else they might find - same as UK bit of the Antarctica

I was very lucky to have a 2 week cruise and a 4 month holiday in the Falklands in the early 1980’s, and what a delightful place it was. I am sure it was all about, freedom, liberty and democracy, oh yeah, and Tevez is a misunderstood guy who only wants what's best for his family and fans.........

You gotta love the Argies..

Maggie was asked to double the marines force on the island because of the build up of ships in area and she refused. Fox was told by Whitehall to surrender and made the CO of marines give in to the grease balls. Fun how we had election just after we had won too.

Yes, wasn't it marvellous how the British electorate rewarded Maggie for her complete fuck up by stopping the patrols by HMS Endurance and removing full UK citizenship from the Islanders through the 1981 Nationality Act, thus encouraging General Galtieri.

They have started building the replacement for the Ark Royal but are going to mothball them when they are finished and possibly sell one of the two.

And apparently they are not the suitable for the aircraft we have.

Would the Argies want the islands if there was no oil, I seriously doubt it given the state of their economy as they'd have to fund it too.

I notice that the Argies have managed to round up a few other countries into barring ships flying the Falklands flag from docking in their ports - so what, it's not like Brazil are going to turn down business from a major coffee consuming country like Britain is it.

They can try, but after the last time it became enshrined in UN law that the Falklanders have a right to determine which country they belong to. If Argentina try to invade again they'll find themselves sanctioned to the back teeth.

Has anyone in this Forum looked at the reports from the 2 welltests that they carried out in the falklands last year?

I hear a lot about all the oil in the Falklands but the share price of the exploration company did not exactly rocket after the tests, also where do you think the oil is going to be piped to?

It will not be the UK and the nearest mainland country and therefore shortest pipeline option is ??? You guessed it Argentina.

Argintinian refineries, Argentinian jobs taxes etc

Lets not get too excited about this "Massive" discovery

Just my tuppence worth

I'm out here now, you do realise the FI Government pay something in the order of £175M a year to have us down here? A tiny percentage of their fisheries income. Pretty much pays for itself and hardly costs the uk anything at all. And that's been the way for at least the last 30yrs that I've been coming down here
