It appears Wikipedia and a couple of other websites have evaporated.

How will we do our homework now?

Just clicked to search on there and got this:-

'For more than a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia.'

Its a great website that after some playing around, finally found the place I once saw on television that I would really want to visit as totally fascinated by it, couldn't have found it without Wikipedia.

The place is called the Cave of Swallows

The Wiki blackout is a protest against US Congress to introduce censorship under the altruism of copyright infringement.

I think most people are not stupid enough to believe that intelligent men & women in government have not realised the impact of what these bills will have on genuine and honest information on the internet. Of course they know.

By introducing these two bills they are capitalising on an opportunity to restrict, control and censor the free information on the internet that we take for granted. I'd be enormously surprised if there weren't a reference to restricting access to extremist websites in there somewhere.

I applaud Wiki for it's stance. The US Congress bill is a blatant attempt at censorship and probably has more to do with attacking sites like Wikileaks than combating piracy in my opinion.

State control of the Internet is very undesireable in my view.

The Internet will always be a threat to those in control.

If you are looking for an alternative to Wikipedia, the US right-wing have their very own version called "conservapedia". It's a hugely useful resource.

For instance I now know that dinosaurs were created approximately 6,000 years ago, along with other land animals, and therefore co-existed with humans, thus debunking the Theory of Evolution and the beliefs of evolutionary scientists about the age of the earth.

They also seem to claim that Chris Hitchins' cancer can be directly attributed to his atheism
