Ive just been asked to give a presentation on thursday morning to a group of junior doctors.

Ive done quite a few in the past but as this is short notice should i make notes and key points or do you think i should just waffle from the top of my head

Noooooo kill the powerpoint,anyone can give a powerpoint presentation,Diamond is more than capable of engaging a fantastic discussion without it

Powerpoints were the bane of my life at uni,they sent most of us to sleep x

If you know the subject very well - a few pics and waffle on. I always do.

If you are not sure a few slides will help to keep you on track.

Do you get nervous?

A few notes/bullet points may help. But everyone has a different way. I have always used bullet points for the bits I want to discuss.

To answer you all, its lasting half an hour, my gut instint is to talk from the heart but i will put some key points down and find an order in which to talk instead of going backwards and forwards. There first year students so it needs to come across easily

The darker side of me who has experienced the snobbery in the NHS first hand wonders if you might have been set up.What?..Paranoid?. Moi? . I would be nervous about going in without some notes.

Might it be worth asking for more time to prepare? How long are you expected to speak? What vis aids will be available (OHP, powerpoint etc.)...

Either that or turn it into a quiz followed by a discussion of the answers.

There will be no visial aids, slides or pics, it will just be me talking. The specialist has just this minute phoned me to as ask me if i would do it as im a historian (or something) on the subject

Then absolutely use powerpoint! That way you CAN waffle your way through it, with minimal prep.

This sounds perfect, it helps those learning if the content is well ordered, if you know your subject well and arent nervous bullet points are ideal.

Hi Diamondsmiles

Just a thought, but if you have to use 'powerpoint'... It's good to use visual references and then talk around it (or at it). Also, if anyone has any questions, take them during the presentation as you go, and turn it into a Q/A or a debate - much more interesting and will involve your audience... only do this if you REALLY know your subject well though!

There is nothing more dull that watching and listening to someone reading straight off a slide!

It makes it look like they don't know what they're talking about

I try to think first about what 3 or 4 key points of information people should take away from any talk.

And ensure these are repeated/explained three times to ensure those listening get it.

e.g. set out key topics, i.e. names of the three areas. Talk about them in a little detail, then end with a quick summary.

Well if you had read what i have already written, ive always written them out in full before. As im out all day tomorrow i havent got time to write something out that will take 30 minutes to read. Hope that answers your question

I hate attending attending these sort of things, either I'm having to talk to a group of people who don't have an inkling about what I'm talking about, or I'm having wire my jaws together to prevent me from yawning.

Avoid Death By Powerpoint.

Use a few cue cards and most importantly, look into the audience members' eyes. Most of the guys will then be so entranced they won't hear anything you are saying anyway! The women will know what you mean, women always seem telepathic when talking amongst themselves.

For students might be an idea to pose questions as points, ask them to discuss with person next to them and then check with your advice. Gets the old brain into gear and keeps em focused.

Just to let you know that it went brillantly, there was 12 students, one of ther leturers or whatever they where and the specialist who asked me. It did go on for nearly 2hrs though, about an hour was questions and answers. Afterwards the specialist said i was awesome lol

our business means we present alot of courses, knowledge of the subject is always in your head, so go with that, some groups see notes as not knowing what you talk about
