Guts have a lot of nerves, were there’s nerves there’s a lot of feelings/sensation and to go with your gut is similar to going with what your foof or dong is feeling. You don’t really go with your gut feeling, you go with reason.

My gut feeling is usually quite similar to my head so I tend to go with it, especially about work and sex

Not so much about food when I’m on a diet lol

My indepth research (goggle) says:-

"Actually, when you are “trusting your gut,” you are actually trusting your brain, which is the source that gut feeling. This “gut feeling” is an instinctual response from your brain to protect you from making what it perceives to be the wrong decision."

I think gut feeling is like a spidey sense, if you feel something's not right listen to it. Whether that originates from head or heart I don't know.
