They need to know as a minor form of triage, how long to make each appointment. With that said some are bitches and I'm sure take great pleasure in actually being nosey.

Stuff you could see the nurse for) and clogging up appointments I reserve the right to not tell them if they asked. " And they will reserve the right not to allow you to see a GP. It is, as previously stated on here, an NHS directive and they are obliged to ask. With so many people going to see a GP unnecessarily or expecting a private medical service for free it has had to be tightened up. Receptionists are the 'guard dogs' employed by the partners in the surgeries much as any other receptionists are in any other businesses. If you are unwell to the point that you need a GP then it would make sense to follow the protocol you are being asked to adhere to. If you would prefer not to state your reason for attending the surgery in an open/public situation then by politely asking the receptionist if you can answer that question in private then they will usually oblige and talk to You in a side room. Those who use and abuse both GP surgeries and the NHS in general are usually the ones who need it least. Those who genuinely need it are empathetic to those providing the service and by remaining understanding receive the treatment that they expect. Remember if you are arsey then when you next really need an appointment those receptionists will recall who you are and will probably not be as helpful as you may wish.

Who said anything about being arsey? It was just not wanting to tell receptionists your personal, intimate issues. Personally, I have never been arsey to a docs receptionist

Now ok I don't see the docs often but our receptionist has never asked why we need to see the doctor, the only time they would ask is if it was an appointment with a nurse so they could get the right nurse. If they did refuse I am happy to go to a Walk in centre instead. I don't have to divulge my health issues to anyone but the doctor.I can be polite while saying those words to a non medical person. It is a tad worrying that you say a receptionist may decide to be unprofessional the next time I wanted an appointment, maybe she shouldn't in that job at all

"There are two kinds of receptionist nice ones and bitches It just makes me chuckle how they try to demand that the person they are dealing with tell them exactly what's wrong in a public reception area lol like they have a Doctorate but are keeping it on the down low To be fair it's not the receptionists choice. They need to know as a minor form of triage, how long to make each appointment. With that said some are bitches and I'm sure take great pleasure in actually being nosey. " I agree with with your first comment and the second is absolutely true!
