Bowie did a lot of different projects where Elvis was only good at the music.

I was going to say the same thing, a case of people putting more weight on recent memory than older ones

In terms of British music I would put Freddie Mercury ahead of David Bowie. One off my all time favourite songs is Under Pressure a duet with Queen & David Bowie yet most people I know seem to call it a Queen song.

I would give it to Bowie too .

Those who would come close would be Elvis , McCartney , Jagger , Dylan , Jack Nicholson , Robert De Niro , Charlie Chaplin , and probably loads more , but I really think Bowie deserves it .

Good choice. A true artist and pioneer. Not just a singer of other songwriters work. It’s just the word ‘Entertainer’ doesn’t quite encompass it well. You automatically think of Des O’Connor and Val Doonican, and that just isn’t right

Ken Dodd.... plus he had loads of top40 songs... people don’t automatically think of him as a singer

I would agree, even to say performer would belittle his body of work. He explored his creativity through many lenses.

Nicholson, De Niro weren't pioneers, they where applying theories of Strasburg and Adler.

Both good contenders, think Keaton would edge it based on the more physical aspects.

Though I would list Bowie as a great creative force, I think that if he was alive the best entertainer of the century would embarrass him. It encompasses so much, and so many it becomes meaningless.

Though to his credit my 10 year old granddaughter is a major fan and has stolen all my Bowie CD's.
