Tufty the Squirrel was the invention of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, a mascot for a new road safety initiative for under-fives launched in 1961. More than 60,000 children joined the Tufty Club (expanded to allow older children to join) and the number of road accidents fell for the first time in ten years. For the enrolment fee of 2s. 6d. you received a Club badge featuring Tufty in his blue jacket and yellow trousers, along with a book of 12 attractively illustrated stories about Tufty and his furry friends, explaining the basics of road safety. Your parents would have had to sign a form promising to read the stories to you and teach the lessons they contained. There were songs to sing and colouring books to enjoy as you learned the Kerb Drill.

Google is a wonderful thing
