I've never quite understood how people find entertainment in miserable and depressing TV shows like Eastenders or Coronation Street. Is it because watching somebody else's crappy life makes you feel slightly better about your own slightly less crappy life?

I agree, my mum made me watch Emmerdale once, it was dire. I know loads of people who love it though.

To be fair Coronation Street actually has a fair balance of humour and drama so isn't all depressing and serious storylines, in fact some scenes and characters are downright sitcom.

As for soaps in general, I guess the reason they are so popular is because they all have characters and present day to day lives (albeit somewhat exaggerated ones) that we can all relate to in some way or another, and in some cases can learn from.

In the same way that I often ask myself, why do people watch the Jeremy Kyle Show?...

You've only got to step inside a branch of Asda or Sports Direct to feel equally as depressed.

I find a trip to Asda has the same effect. I always feel like I’m winning at life after a visit.

People watch the Jeremy Kyle show to look down on the participants and wonder why they dont have teeth

A lot of people who watch soaps use them as a means to escape their own lives even if its just a short time so these shows do help even if they can be a bit depressing and lack any sense of humour.

I’m sure there are enough tv shows and channels for people to avoid these awful depressing soaps that they don’t watch but know so much about.

If you are comparing Asda to Jeremy Kyle you must shop in there and watch that show too - again plenty of other options available so you don’t have to wrinkle your nose up at the hoi poli.
