Farewell!

Hefty Hideaway

I go to a lot of gigs. I’ve seen a couple of ‘Farewell Tours’ only for the band to re emerge as if nothing ever happened.

In 2001 I sobbed my heart out when James played for the last time and sure enough those tears were in vain.

Ozzy and Sabbath did it. As did the Quo. Even good old Steps.

Have you done the Farewell tour? Who’s last gig do you wish you had seen?

There’s a few actors I wish I’d seen on stage doing certain parts like colm Wilkinson doing Jean valjean in les miserables that would have been brilliant

Good shout. I wish I had seen McKellan’s King Lear.

Seen in far off places

I would love to have seen The Smiths and The Stone Roses live, before they both split.

I too have seen James play live a few times - Alton Towers 1992 was particularly memorable.

I also had tickets to see Nirvana perform at Brixton academy in 1994 - Kurt Cobain killed himself the week prior.

Saw Carter USM's 2 farewell gigs in 2014 they were pretty special.

Saw Sabbath on one of the final dates of the farewell tour, think they were advertising the farewell dates on the way out!

And Soft Cell's farewell gig a few months ago was gloriously chaotic

Kiss are doing their final rounds in July. I’m tempted to take my daughter along. Their live shows are glorious.

...also saw the Oasis penultimate gig - Wembley Stadium 2009.

For me, support band Kasabian stole the show.

Not many of you will have heard of them, but a band from Sheffield made 2 albums 1989/90, wish I had got to see them.....

Ramon karimloo as the phantom is another one, he was brilliant in the 25th anniversary concert

Saw them twice and mediocre at best. There were far better bands around at that time.

Desperate to Fleetwood Mac but couldn’t cop a ticket

Was at the Sabbath one in London... absolutely phenomenal

Would like to have seen Lonnie Donegan, he was performing right up to the end and died on tour. Joe Brown did a lot of dates last year but I couldn't get to any of them so I hope he's going to do some more, he can't keep going for ever, I hope I haven't left it too late.

A little along the same lines, I went to a '60s Gold' concert with my dad in October and it was... Odd. There were a few bands I'd heard of and a few who'd had one hit wonders that are still played today. But mostly it all seemed a bit depressing. The performers were tired and the intros and jokes were delivered in a manner that suggested they were sick of hearing themselves. And I couldn't help but feel it was a far cry from the screaming hordes of girls in the 60s!

I saw Led Zep at Knebworth in '79 a year before the late great Bonzo's sad demise.

Regretting not seeing Leonard Cohen who was touring with Suzanne Vega a few years back.

I desperately want to see Nick Cave and Shane MaGowan (imagine those guys as a double act)

Bruce Springsteen in 1988 at Hillsborough was amazing

All I need to see soon

There and to the left a bit

Just missed out on The Jam's farewell tour as I had just started my Navy training - biggest regret is never having seen them live.

On the flipside of farewell/last gigs, Madness' comeback gig at Finsbury Park in 1992 is up there with the best, the euphoric atmosphere really could be cut with a knife just before they came on stage and then we caused an earthquake

Mark Bedford was discussing the Finsbury Park gigs on a recent ‘Off The Beat and Track’ podcast. It was a great listen and damn I wish I had been there.

Will have to look it up

The whole gig (bar about two songs) is available on DVD - not quite the same I know but worth tracking it down all the same.

Is up there amongst the best days of my life - the moment they came out on stage will live with me till the day I die.

The Fleadh ran for two or three years in the 90s I think, but was run by The Mean Fiddled and when that went under so did the Fleadh if I remember rightly
