Bloody Bus driver

I very rarely go out unaccompanied due to being partially sighted but needed to go to my local Tesco as I had run out of some stuff, as it was starting to get dark, I thought I would take a chance as there is a bus stop at the top of my road and the bus stops outside Tesco, I waited for nearly 20 mins and finally the bus arrived, there was a group of 5 or 6 teenagers who pushed on the bus ahead of me, they began asking the driver if the bus went to a certain place and was told no, so they asked about somewhere else and again was told no, so they exited the bus, I stepped forward and was feeling for the step of the bus with my guidance cane when she shut the doors, with my cane in it, I yelled out for her to hang on but she just started to pull away with my cane trapped in the doors, I kept yelling and a passer by banged on the side of the bus but she kept going, lucky enough with effort I was able to pull my cane from the doors otherwise she could have ripped my arm of as my cane is strapped to my wrist

I sometimes wonder whether when recruiting do bus companies actively seek out bad drivers with zero inter-personel skills.

Police are still open. Ringing the garage is pointless.

Its very easy to blame the bus driver but I'm wondering if she assumed that their were only teenagers there and that it was them banging on the side of the bus? Im sure the bus company will do a full investigation before takin any action of course.

Im sorry for the distress you were caused but think we all to often jump to conclusions and need to look at things from all angles before (as some posters have suggested) having someone sacked.

The land of grey peas and bacon

Some bus drivers are really helpful. Some are just plain awful. The amount of times in the pissing rain have bus drivers just drove past the bus stop. I need to get a car..... Plus they put the prices up it takes the piss...

not sure if over there is the same as NI but we have camera's looking down onto where people walk onto the bus so surely if you's are the same they could play it back and see what happened

"Tired to phone bus company but the lines closed at 5pm until Monday morning"

Try and turn this into a positive thing.

Now you have plenty of time to get facts on paper and give the company a ring on Monday without feeling the emotion you must be feeling right now.

There is no way on earth the driver of that bus didn't know there was a problem. Their actions were downright dangerous and an absolute disgrace.

I'm glad you didn't come to too much harm xxxx

Yes there are cameras on the bus, I have informed the police and am waiting for a call back from them, from the department that will deal with it

Menston near Ilkley

These things are often better put in writing so Email the bus company and your local Passenger transport authority for them to pick up as soon as their offices open Monday morning.

I am sure that the incident would have been recorded by the buses CCTV as someone mentioned.

It must have been very frightening. A similar thing happened on a train in Guiseley some years ago and my friend tried to save the lady who was trapped by the doors and carried along the platform. Sadly the lady died.

It's very easy to blame people when they get it completely wrong and could have caused someone a very serious accident.

Nigh on every bus I've got on has doors that passengers get on through that are right next to the driver's seating position.

So how did the driver not look as the doors were closed? The cane sticking through the door might have been another clue.

Why do people always assume the OP is wrong and has a legitimate grievance? Fully investigate by all means but it reads to me like she has been poorly treated.

Can't believe a bus driver would have done that on purpose.

The Daily Mail might like the story though.

Always report if either today or next day possible. If they don't know they can't act.

At our bus stop they always go by 10 mins early then the scheduled time. We have complained and they have confirmed GPS shows we are correct. I wait until next week to see if back to business as usual.

In addition every day at same stop several 'students' stop the bus and ask if it's going to a certain place. And every day the bus driver points out the fact the bus says Horwich as it's desination as per it's display rathe r than the other direction

I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to you, I'm also registered blind and it seems that some people just don't see you. I wish you all the luck in getting this driver punished and hopefully retrained. I only use taxis now after terrible treatment on public transport.

I'd most certainly be making a note of the time, date and bus number that you were attempting to get on, then I'd be on the phone to the bus company ASAP, but before doing all that, I'd be making a report to the police.

I hope you got the name/address of any witness(es) ?

The CCTV is a good point. From experince bus companies really don;t like it when you start asking how to access it via freedom of information.

All drivers who work as "drivers" know they sign up to "duty of care" thats for the public a duty of care, drivers not shown it at all.

I had a similar experience a couple years ago, but in my case it was my leg which was stuck in the door. The driver was so busy looking at the leggy blond in front of me that I went unnoticed.

Anyway after being dragged about 40 feet down the road, despite being alerted to the problem by the people on the bus, he finally stopped and opened the doors. He then refused to accept my fare or drive on until I'd got off the bus.

I took a note of the time, date, bus company, and license plate number, plus a description of the driver, and made a formal complaint. I received a letter several weeks later saying there was no evidence the driver had done anything wrong. (???)

Sorry to hear about what happened, most bus drivers here are good. You need to contact your local transport authority and let them know. I have a guide dog, white cane and sonic detector to help me get out and about, you should not have to stay in because of poor sight. I was told to use life or it just passes you by.

Thats terrible and sounds very scary and the driver is definately at fault but it's harsh for people to judge and say things like they have no interpersonal skills etc without having done the job yourself . I am currently a firefighter and in the past have been a head chef at a very busy hotel but the most stressful job I have ever done was bus driving . I was spat at regularly , verbally abused constantly , punched three times , robbed at knifepoint twice and the constant stress of driving in heavy traffic and getting constantly moaned at " why are you late " etc . Kids constantly mucking about banging on the bus as your pulling away to stop it then when you stop they just laugh etc etc . That's prob why she just looked ahead and didn't look towards the door . Still go ahead and complain but don't be too hard on her , try and understand what she has to go through to earn a few quid . Twelve hour shifts , five and a half hours of driving without a break then a short break and another five hours .

Driving buses is more stressful than going into fires where you could die or be maimed !

Hope your ok , if you write to the company you should get compensation .

If its that stressful maybe they should only have male bus drivers like they always used too.

All public transport have cctv installed and the incident will have been recorded.

Make sure to mention this when you phone the bus company.

You are also entitled to a copy of the cctv footage that has you in the timed film, just ask for the forms to fill in to receive your copy.
