Wolf whistles and cat calling a hate crime ?

So the latest news is saying that it’s time to class wolf whistling and cat calling as a hate crime . The gender equality group is saying it’s time to do this as there is no place in modern society for such mysogony .

The police say they have way too much to do as it is without being called out for this .

What do you guys think ?

Hate crime , and call the police ?

Or

A relic from the past that we could all do without , but no need to call the police .

Or

Harmless fun , and can be a confidence booster .

Doesn't bother me hugely. I usually wiggle a little more confidently if I hear a wolf whistle. Crude comments I can live without, but see no point in bothering an already overstretched police service wth it.

I was about to post that my wife says it puts a spring in her step too when it happens , and although crude comments aren’t nice , she wouldn’t dream of calling it a hate crime !

I think that this site might be the wrong one to get a balanced opinion base on.

Personally though I think that this sort of thing is about guys sexualising women and can be very unnerving for many. At the very least it reduces them to sexual objects and carries the message 'I don't care who you are or what you do, Im making demands on your body.'

Some see it as a compliment, many don't.

I'm not impressed by it... its generally aimed at any female.. I'm under no illusions... but certainly wouldnt class it as a hate crime.. I just ignore and keep walking.

Though once I did call someone out on it as I passed some builders.. pointed out to them I may be tall, but was only 15... they shut up pretty damn quick

It displays a lack of respect and manners when issued from someone who doesn't know the person well as in being a close friend for instance where that level of trust exists.

To classify it as a hate crime is ridiculous and shows how extreme the PC thought police have become.

In bad taste and no manners yes. Crime? No.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a hate crime. I can see how someone who is constantly pestered by it could view it as harassment. I'm not sure I'd like to be treated this way unless I were in the right mood for it. All dressed up smart and sexy in a night club and I'd invite the attention I don't get Walking down the street and being cat called and letched at every 5mins. I'd have an issue with it then.

imagine being a 15 year old girl walking down the street and a group of theae twats start whistling at you half wouldnt know they where whistling at underage girls

Sweet, so in the name of equality can we finally shut down Loose Women?

Is it irritating, upsetting, and uncomfortable for some women? Yes.

Should guys really be doing it to random women? No.

Is it a HATE crime? No.

I think just making it something that's utterly cringey to do is probably more effective than criminalising it. Making it criminal gives ammunition to claim women are always offended and to talk about 'PC gone mad' blah, blah, blah. Turn it around and ridicule the ones who still think it's funny to do instead. Proper building companies have rules about it now anyway do they not? It's already on its way out.

However it can be quite intimidating. I remember being about 16 and I was walking through a car park and about 4 guys started wolf whistling and catcalling and I I felt quite frightened.

It would depend on what was said, but I'd say a relic from the past that needs to stop.

However, I've never been subjected to it. It have been told to cheer up in the past though which I think people should also stop doing.

I think the way some men objectify women and harass them is disgusting. Behaviour like this is designed to intimidate, it;s certainly not meant to flatter. Should it be a hate crime, probably not. Are there extreme scenarios where the police should be involved, yes probably. But in those cases it's more about harrassment than the actual wolf-whistling

Also given so many women really don;t appreciate it, any man who thinks that it is aceptable because some women do enjoy it really needs to take a long hard look at themselves

I remember being late teens and a group of lads shouting and whistling at me as they drove past. I hated it. I rushed back to work feeling really embarrassed.

There is a woman I work with who wolf whistles at other men in the office. I think if it was the other way round it would probably be reported. So it’s not just one gender that does it.

The proposals are not all about wolf whistling and its just sensationalising in the media to focus on that. It's about encouraging harassment of women to be taken seriously.

Several police forces already record misogyny -

"Katie Ghose, the chief executive of Women’s Aid, said forces who had introduced the recording of misogyny had not seen an influx in reporting of wolf-whistling but an increase in reports of serious sexual harassment and assault."
