1. A bat and a ball cost £1.10 in total. The bat costs £1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

2. It takes five machines five minutes to make five widgets. How long does it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

3. A patch of lily pads on a lake doubles in size daily. It takes 48 days for it to completely cover the lake. How long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?

Keep asking yourself. You'll get there

There and to the left a bit

"Aargh I hate things like this. Why is the first answer 5p not 10p "

Because the ball has to cost something - so for the bat to cost £1 more than it and the total to be £1.10 that cost has to be 5p, and the cost of the bat £1.05

£1.00 isn't £1 more than 10p.

£1.05 is £1 more than 5p

Somewhere In The Ether…

We very much need to take the principals of inflation, import duty and Brexit uncertainty into the mathematical process here.

£1.05 is £1 more than 5p "

So simple when you know how

Yeah. Um now thinking 5 mins though

5 to make 5 = 5mins

100 to make 100 should be same time...5 mins

Think I over thought it

I had to think about it for ages.

I had quite a long argument with someone about working out VAT. They couldn't understand that if they'd paid £1 including VAT for something and they wanted to find out how much VAT theyd paid it wasn't as simple as taking 20% off. It did both our heads in.

1. Items often come at a better price when bought as a pack. The ball on its own would not doubt end up costing more than as part of a pack. As we have no individual costs for a ball on its own who could tell? And then the bat would on its own cost £1 more than what ever the cost of the ball was.

2. 5 mins assuming each machine works tottaly indupendant in the process start to finish and at the same rate.

3. 47 days

You have to do some sort of division thing first to see how long it takes one machine to make one thing, I think.
