That girls only have a vaccination for it at school.

Anyone can have it and pass it on without knowing.

There are usually no visible signs

It shows up in a smear test

Not sure but I don’t think condoms protect against it.

Think it can be passed on orally but again not sure on that

I read that they're gonna market it towards boys and men too since the percentage of females getting the vaccination has dropped?

Both girls and boys should be vaccinated before they become sexually active for the vaccaine to be most effective. Bottom line vaccinating protects against HPV and potential associated cancers (penile and cervical)

Oh and it can cause cervical cancer which I think is the reason its only girls who are vaccinated.

Some strains of HPV can be transmitted sexually. Warts can disappear but you will still have the virus and some can cause various cancers.

Ok here’s some facts for you, HPV

Does cause cancer ( I’m proof of it)

It’s transmitted by many forms oral sex being the most common ..

General warts, cervical, prostrate and throat cancers can be caused by this virus

Yet most adults already have it

It’s not acceptable that only girls receive the vaccine then surely? Is it more likely in females? I can only assume it must be for this to be the case.

Doncaster

Hell of a lot

The basics being there 7 types of strains that come under the umbrella of HPV

We all have it, it stays dormant in some and certain things can trigger it once becoming sexually active. Some people have it active without any physical symptoms so can pass it on sexually unknowing as it’s passed on solely via skin to skin contact of the genitalia areas condoms don’t prevent against it. They are only likely to present symptoms during periods of weakened immune system eg during chemo or pregnancy

It’s the most common trigger of genital cancers

In Ireland the vaccine has been available free to girls for the last number of years through the school system. This is shortly being rolled out for boys. Pending this boys can be vaccinated privately. Not sure about UK but presume you could do the same.

Lots of people getting the HPV and HSV viruses mixed. Human papilloma virus is not an std although is spread through sexual or close skin to skin contact , HSV the herpes simplex virus is the one which causes cold sores, warts and genital herpes. Two different viruses altogether.

When I was 26 I had my first smear test which picked up abnormal cells. Had treatment. They tested for the HPV virus I don’t have it thank god but would have had contact at some point.

The HPV virus will cause abnormal cells and takes anything up to ten years to fully mutate into cancer. That’s why it’s so important ladies get smear tested. I don’t think they can test men for it currently??

Oh as for the vaccination yes yes yes do it. Let your kids have it. The colposcopy nurse said to me if she had a pound for every girl who said her mum wouldn’t let her have it and was now requiring treatment she’d be rich.

I’m lucky we caught mine early I was stage 3 and had a fair amount of my cervix removed but it’s healed. Some girls aren’t... think of poor old Jade Goody she died at my age. Leaving kids behind.

HPV is no joke.

Initially it was cost. Around £120 per vaccine of which they needed 3 per child. Now reduced to two but still expensive.

HPV is not herpes

It’s a virus that is easily caught and treated but if not treated can cause various cancers

Herpes generally causes sores around the mouth, HPV is not visible and has no real signs, you can get general warts but they also can be caused by other issues too

So not easy to detect except blood tests

Your immune system will produce antibodies and get rid of most strains of HPV within a few years without treatment.

It's more difficult for women.

Focus on strengthening your immune system. Apparently most people get it but it's not easily detectable in men.

Thing is condoms don’t protect you from this, you can get this from skin to skin contact (non sexual), reading about it the piece infront of me quotes “most people will get the virus at some point in their lives” as it’s treatable I can only assume this inclined me to believe must be curable too

Correct. The process usually goes. Smear test - colposcopy and biopsy - treatment either a LLETz or LEEP. Or cone biopsy. Basically they burn away the abnormal cells with a hot wire or laser. They then will re screen you in 6 months if no more abnormal cells found back to 3 yearly smears. I had to be rushed back on a cancer referral as I was bleeding during sex but it was just down to scar tissue from the previous excision.

I’m now all clear and back to 3 yearly checks thank goodness.

I always ask for a throat swab when I get checked at the clinic because you can get all sorts of nasties in your throat. I had a friend who got oral gonorrhoea. She had to have a huge dose of antibiotics and is now all clear.

I hope you have the best possible outcome fingers and toes crossed for you! X

It’s not solely contracted by sexual contact

Giving oral is only one way to contract the virus

You can get this by skin to skin contact non sexual!!

Grow up.

This isn’t about “stats”, nor is it a competition on what who has on their profile, but your immaturity would say, it is to you.

I don’t need to reel off who I’ve met, or tell forum posters I’m established because they hit a nerve. My profile is hidden for good reason, but if you are genuinely intrigued as to who I am, when I re-open you are more than welcome to have a good read, I’m guessing you have plenty of time for that.

Now, I’d prefer not to continue this on an important thread such as this one, after being messaged politely, you are welcome to talk to yourself.

Boys do get competitive you are correct.

As a man, I don’t need to “compare” profiles as some sort of point scoring game.

I shall end it here, I see I may have hurt someone’s feelings!

"Thing is condoms don’t protect you from this, you can get this from skin to skin contact (non sexual), reading about it the piece infront of me quotes “most people will get the virus at some point in their lives” as it’s treatable I can only assume this inclined me to believe must be curable too

I think you may be right as if abnormal cells are found in a smear test they are removed during a colposcopy and it’s apparently the abnormal cells that can cause it.

Brilliant news

Thank you and thanks to our wonderful NHS. Without it I could be a lot worse right now. I’m just glad I can still have children and I don’t have cancer. Sadly the outcome for some is much much worse.

Yes I’m afraid I’m testimony to that

Just so we all understand the seriousness of what I’m talking about I have stage 2 cancer of the throat, I caught it as it started to migrate into my soft pallet of the mouth (stage3)

I’m hopeful of a full recovery ( never guaranteed) this was caused by HPV

So whilst immature comments seem funny to the person posting them, if he’d gone through the horrendous 4 months I have had to endure perhaps he wouldn’t be so offensive and inappropriate

But as it’s a forum and open to all, one has to accept occasionally you will get insincere comments, I’m sure in his own mind he’s being funny whilst everyone else has a differing opinion. But as this is an open forum perhaps we should engage in the subject rather than debate other issues ??

I suppose it was like when I contracted pneumonia last year and spent a week in hospital, mostly on drip. There is a guy who lives opposite to me that was on the same ward, although he went in the same day that I came out, and another guy, who used to live in the same block as me on the ground floor who is sadly no longer with us because he wouldn't go to his Doctor

Ignorance is bliss, till it is too late.

A lot of people put things of or convince themselves it is just a sore throat or infection till it is too late to treat.

Wondered why your cancer blog stopped, hope things are becoming more positive.

Very true. Maybe if the incredibly immature people were faced with a cancer that may have been caused by hpv they wouldn't be so fucking immature. Because from where I'm sat I'm scared.

If you've kept up to date with your smears, even if you do it's likely very early stage and can be easily removed. I've had a number of friends have abormal cells removed. It's unpleasant but a simple procedure under local anaesthetic and you're back to normal in a couple of weeks. For suspected cancer you usually get an appointment pretty quickly so at least you'll know fairly soon. Sending big hugs!!

try not to stress too much (easier said than done i know) and don’t spend too much time on google as it wont be any good for your mental health

i was lucky enough that the first time i had cells removed there was an overlap of appointment / smear results that made me think the duplicate appointment was a mistake and they would send me away ... instead they did colposcopy and there and then skipped biopsy straight to lletz because of the severity... meant i had no time to panic but did come out more than a little shell shocked ... some cramps and an emotional night, bleeding for up to a month but back to normal very quickly with full health

the second time i drove myself mad online while waiting on biopsy results ... while i think it is terrifying the amount of misinformation there is further up this thread ... sometimes too much information isn’t helpful either

oh and if it helps ... not all abnormal cells even get removed anymore... if its minor they may just monitor you as its now been proven its possible they may return to normal over a period of time and its not guaranteed to lead to cancer

fingers crossed for a swift appointment and a good outcome

Don’t panic about it!

The fact that they’ve picked up the HPV just means they’ll keep more of an eye on you, which is a good thing. If there is anything suspect lurking, it will get caught early enough to sort without much bother.

Abnormal cells can be something completely minor - I had my first lot of abnormal cells at 18, and was only discharged from have having yearly smears around 4 years ago. I had them every 3 months, 6 months then annually for 14 years. And it’s actually taken some adjusting to not being checked regularly.

Of course you’re going to be terrified but you’re being checked out and that is the main thing! Sending you lots of love xxx

"Thank you to all the lovely ladies for responding and being so supportive and thank you OP for posting this! I'm in my 30s and knew nothing about HPV"

I genuinely think that’s because the HPV vaccine came in after we’d left school, so it’s a bit of a grey area knowledge wise for us. But honestly it just means you’ll get regular checks and they’ll keep an eye on you. It doesn’t mean it could turn into something further.

I’ve had more colposcopys, biopsy’s and treatment than I can count, and used to lie there looking at a half naked man placed on the ceiling to try and make women feel at ease. In the end even he got boring because I saw him so much.

Weirdly, I enjoy seeing statuses like this every so often, not because of the nerves and upset you’re going through, but because it highlights just how important smear tests are, the benefits far outweigh a few moments of discomfort and embarrassment. And let’s be honest, we’ve probably all had far worse (and shorter) sexual encounters. I had my first smear at 18 and I dread to think what would have happened if I’d waited until I was 21. And threads like this hopefully show that enough of us have been through them and the issues they bring and we can all reassure each other with our stories x
