My thoughts are this, HGV drivers are continually assessed to keep their licenses

Should normal drivers be assessed every couple of years to ensure they are safe to drive on our hectic busy roads?

Yes, and no one should be allowed to drive over the age of 75!

Catthorpe

Yes. Think it will happen anyway, more money in governments coffers, they won't resist forever.

"Yes, and no one should be allowed to drive over the age of 75!"

Controversial but the same comment comes up quite often in these discusdions.

However, insurance companies will tell you that drivers around that age are less likely to have an accident than drivers under 25.

Based on your logic, should people not be allowed to drive until they're over 25?

What’s going to happen with the CPC once pumped out of Europe ?

Equivalent cash cow from DVLA no doubt.

No as they'll be testing millions every year. There's 30 odd million drivers.

Central Scotland

Maybe an online test of basic knowledge - more like the current theory test with hazard perception.

I need to reapply for my license every 3 years on medical grounds but it's just a box ticking thing with the gp/consultant. Doesn't take much time or effort. Can't see why there shouldn't be a general check for everyone after 10 years or so.

can't agree totally with that .not everyone is slow and dithery at that age .

The way I see many drive now I wonder how they ever passed their test .maybe everyone should have a refreshher every 5 years .some definately need it . I think 17 is far too young . giving a young petrolhead the ropes to drive a powerful car is a recipe for disaster .young drivers should be limited to what they drive. Hiding behind mummy and daddy's insurance is bad . when i passed my test I was limited to 1100cc car .I tried to get a 1.6l. The insurance company I had, laughed at me and said .OK wait 3 years .come back when you are 21 and have had some real experience. How times have changed .now any numbnut can get behind the wheel of a car .driving is a priviledge . it's not a necessity .
