Bit random but...Can you recommend your printer? What brand/ type is it?

Value for money with cartridges etc?

Looking to get a new one, haven't had one for a few years x

Depends what you need I’ve got an Epson 452 with scanner etc. They’re quite cheap but the ink seems quite pricey. And it’s wireless

Bought it for photos and the quality is stunning. Ink I can get the cheaper stuff and I think it's like £20 for 3 colour 5 black or something.

If you're running an Envy mainly for photos you're better off on the instant ink program.

A 'page' is a page - whether you're printing an inch wide black circle in the middle or an edge to edge full colour photo.

It's £7.99 for 300 pages a month. To print 300 A4 photos you'd be spending shit loads more on cartridges and there are cheaper plans if you're not printing as much.

I have that one. The ink is cheap if you don’t mind not having the branded stuff. I’ve never had a better printer to be fair. It gets worked with school work for the kid, uni work for me, photo printing and her art projects. Nifty little machine. Easy to use and it wasn’t expensive.

There's a good deal on at Currys on the HP 6234. £59 with seven months free instant ink subscription and £30 cashback to boot.

So all in for £29 with a shed load of free ink. Even if you scrap it and get a new one in seven months it's more than paid for itself.

epson l355 in two years I have spent £30 in ink! Lots of printing done for a degree

Canon, but make sure it uses sperate inks for each colour.

Canon usually use permanent print heads.

Alternatively, there are some very good printers made by Brother.

However, the best advice is this. Choose a selection of suitable printers and then check out the cost of replacement cartridges on Amazon BEFORE you make a final decision. Oh, and never be afraid of cartridges made by companies other than the printer manufacturer.

I bought an Epsom that uses ink bottles instead of cartridges. Seems to be saving me a fortune at the moment. I don't print often and found the heads would dry out, meaning a new set of cartridges every time.

When the cost of the printer is the same as the cost of cartridges it's mental.

I have a Brother colour laser printer / scanner combo. Sorry, can't remember the model name / number off the top of my head but it is awesome. Also works as a photocopier and works across wifi.

Came in at under £200 and the toner cartridges are pretty reasonable too.

Through experience, generally speaking , the cheaper the printer the more expensive the cartridge.

We’ve all seen the cannons and HPs on offer in larger supermarkets for £20-£30. We succumbed a few years ago as a last minute thing. Turns out it was cheaper to buy another one than replace the ink !

I have several surplus printers, they are all the work of the devil (along with cling film) they never do as they are told always get blocked and the laptop can never “locate” the printer. Despite them being less than 2ft away!

Another vote for HP here - purely because of their Instant Ink program that you pay a set monthly fee based on the number of pages you're likely to print a month (I pay £1.99 for 50 pages) and never come close to printing that - they monitor the ink levels and automatically send replacements when you start running low.

Works out a lot cheaper than having to buy cartridges when you need them plus maintains any warranties by keeping to their own provided ink.

Have a basic model HP printer that was less than £30 from Tesco and has all the bells and whistles you could need for occasional home use.

The Instant Ink thing also gets you customer support and the couple of times I've had to use it they've been excellent.

If youre going to be printing a fair bit get a laser printer. Toner is cheaper and the print quality is much higher.

I recomend reading thewirecutter website for thier latest recommendation, time part of the new york times group and the best site for electronics reviews. They give a simple break down but then usualy have an electronics expert rip the thing apart too

Yes I went for that too because of epson cartridge costs. You can use other inks, but they void your warranty, and can kill the printer (they messed up my last epson).

the right frame of mind -London

Always used laser printers -yes the initial cost and toner replacements are more expensive but then you never have an issue with the cartridges going dry on you when you least expect ithem to. On the plus side it often works out cheaper overall if you use your printer seldom/ irregularly (once you factor in the cost of continually replacing dry/ clogged cartridges) -avoid the remanufactured laser cartridges tho -they often bleed toner.
