FAB CRAP RUNNERS CLUB 2019 - WEEK ONE

Jump to newest

By *alking Disaster OP   Woman

South Oxfordshire

Hello everyone and welcome to WEEK ONE of the FAB Crap Runners Club (2019 edition).

.

.

.

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January 2018, a bunch of Fabbers began improving their fitness through running. None of them were natural athletes but they did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (Mrs T used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

FOR MORE EXPERIENCED RUNNERS:

Tell us what you’re up to with your running, your training and your races. Let’s us know your highs and lows. Please cheer on the newbies and give advice if they ask.

.

.

.

FCRC SOCIAL PARKRUN

I am doing a doodle poll to find out where everyone can get to with ease before organising the next social.

https://doodle.com/poll/77nghmke7uwunrwy

Again, it's completely anonymous and you can vote for as many options as you would like.

Hopefully the regions are self-explanatory (Sorry if you think your county should be in a different region!)

I'm in the process of organising locations for parkruns. I'm thinking one a month in the different regions.

.

.

.

The first one will be in Leicestershire on Saturday 19th January 2019. As this is a public forum, I'll confirm exact location by pm. Please complete this doodle poll if you are able to attend.

https://doodle.com/poll/zywk7en2dx6yabmq

.

.

.

AND FINALLY:

Who is working towards a specific goal? Tell us your progress.

Hello everyone.

Happy New Year.

If you have decided to start the New Year off with a fitness kick, then please feel free to join us here. We will motivate you, cajole you (and, in some cases just kick you into getting off the couch).

We are seriously all abilities. And all here to help you.

I believe last year MrsT used to write everyone's progress in the initial post, so if you'd like me to do that then please let me know.

And please remember the parkrun social - you can walk it if you don't think you're up to that level yet. Then we'll meet for the best bit afterwards - cake

Well I ended 2018 with a run home from work that I really had no motivation so chose the less well lit but shorter route and paid the price by missing my footing and and going flying. Sore knee and sore elbow for the NYD park run double tomorrow!!

There's no "only" about any run, whatever the distance. Good luck with it, train hard and run easy

I tried this last year and got sidetracked with various things but I’m going to see this through this time. I’d like get fitter, tone up and probably most importantly loose a stone and a half by the end of March. So here goes - today I’m 14st 4lb

I did my first double. 27m30s and 27m57s. Given how out of action I have been quite chuffed with those. Didn't like the 4 laps at March, find it hard enough to count 2 and a half laps at littleport lol

I'm in.

Started the year with a double parkrun.

Both very busy, as was every other one. I think all parkruns that were on had record attendance today.

First time was what I expected.

Second one much slower.

But both full of happy runners and a good way to start the year.

I started the C25K last January but struggled and quit when it started getting hot but I did do the coast to coast, which was why I started running/jogging. I started again in Dec but due to family and Xmas I've done nothing for a couple of weeks and now I want to get back into it again my goal is just to do the 5k regularly without walking lots of ups and downs on my route though

I'm on week 3 I think but may have to go back a week.....but I do end up doing more than she says as my full route is 4.5k at the moment and when I'm further on its a double loop so about 8k total but a good 10 min walk up a bloody big hill to finish off (my cool down walk ) i treated myself to some earbuds at xmas so I have to go running now lol

Can I join, I started running last jan and love it just don’t get out as much as I’d like. Not quite up to an ultra, but I’m signed up to a 10mile trail in March and have done 2 of 3 starlight trail relays. Definitely going to push to get my times down on 5 and 10k.

First run/jog/walk of the year! I'm on week 3 run 2, jog 90 secs, walk 90 secs, jog 3 mins, walk 3 mins twice but I was only half way round my route so I did roughly the same again, it would be nice to go back to the beginning, like on a loop. Total distance, roughly, 4.4k

I don't feel too bad and think my ear buds are ace

Parkrun is not a race. It's for running, jogging or walking. It's a good incentive to try and beat your personal best.

And it's normally a very welcoming group.

"First run/jog/walk of the year! I'm on week 3 run 2, jog 90 secs, walk 90 secs, jog 3 mins, walk 3 mins twice but I was only half way round my route so I did roughly the same again, it would be nice to go back to the beginning, like on a loop. Total distance, roughly, 4.4k

I don't feel too bad and think my ear buds are ace "

Great start to the new year!

I’m really crap, I’ve done a few runs in the past from 5km to half marathons but I’m extremely slow and everything hurts and never managed to run any length without stopping! I’ve not ran at all in 2 years and would like to get to the point of running continuously even if it’s only for 5km, any advice welcome.

I am planning on looking at the couch to 5km.

Couch to 5k is a great way to build up slowly and reduce the risk of injury

Those struggling with getting going have a look to see if there is any local running groups, Facebook groups. The group I run with do couch to 5 every couple of months and those who have done it then join the other runners aiming for more.

Like to do most of my long distance running xc and canal path's, as ground is more forgiving and not constantly breathing in car exhaust fumes.

Park run is many different things to many different runners. And that includes it being a race for some. When you get one if the country's finest 10000 metre runners turning up and running a sub 14 minute time it's impossible to say it's not a race

We're both in, having both got into running in the last few years. Mrs started last year and is working towards a 10k having run a healthy 5.6km on NYE, nothing fast but running it all from a couch start and months of walking jogging. Mr (me) done a few 10k's in the last few years and am aiming to find a more regular rhythm this year and work on this ace / distance.

This is exactly where Mrs was. For many reasons she thought she'd never make it. couch to 5km helped no end, but her first reaction when reading your post was to mention 5km is no small distance! 'even if it's only 5km'. She still often runs less than that, it still hurts but she can do it now. Small regular steps.... Be proud of getting out and don't expect everyday to be better than the last some days you'll not feel like it and from nowhere manage a personal best!

"Hello everyone.

Then we'll meet for the best bit afterwards - cake "

Does anyone use the 'run club' features on Strava or runkeeper? Helps to motivate a group!

My post was a slight exaggeration, I have ran a 10km without stopping and a 7km on treadmill and a couple of 5km but never been consistent and don’t know why I stop, it’s more a mental thing than physical I want to get to the point were I know I can always (or at least the majority of the time) go and do a set distance without stopping. I’d like to improve my speed but that’s not really my aim. It took me 3hrs to do a half Mara

Howdy all, I've started my fitness for the year with the aim of running as much in Jan as a I can and then keep it regular after that. I actually started on 28th Dec as I wanted to be in the habit before Jan started..

So far 3 days in and 3 runs completed. Each at just over 6k and getting quicker. Still some way off the pace I was at mid last year.

Have signed up to my first 10k of the year in May and aim to be under 55 mins.. last year I completed it in 58 mins.

I agree with WD, especially as you appear to be upping your pace with each run, sounds like a stress injury waiting to happen if you're not very careful. Make sure you listen to your body, and consider backing off if you start to feel any niggles setting in, before they turn into anything serious.

Kudos for your enthusiasm though!

Quite a few people I know have runstrwajscif over 300 days. The great Ron Hill ran every day until last year.

You just have to listen to your body.

RED is good, but you also have to rest - There is a way that you can have 24 hours rest between runs and still run every day.

I've known people who run regularly who have done RED and they've been knackered afterwards.

When I did it in December I generally ran early mornings before work or lunchtimes at work. Sometimes I ran twice a day. I got my fastest mile time ever during that month.

Good plan. Listen to your body x

There is a saying 'in the head, go ahead. On the chest, get some rest' but to be honest I couldn't run today as I'm knackered from lack of sleep.

Hope you feel better soon x

Good plan from the OP

I wasn’t on here in 2018, but went from “3km is a long way....!” in Jan to “just done my first half marathon” in October (slow but persistent!). It really is do-able.

Aiming to complete two halves in 2019 and pick up my pace over 5km. And see about getting to the social events

"Hello everyone.

Does anyone use the 'run club' features on Strava or runkeeper? Helps to motivate a group!

I've thought about this in the past, unfortunately I don't think you can show bits of your run and hide your location (lots of people are into confidentiality, understandably).

I have a privacy zone set up so I don't think anyone else can see my penthouse suite on Strava. If you want to search me and test this feel free wd

PM me your username!"

Happy to try it out too .... Pretty sure I've set one up that allows you to not post location but post run details length Nd pace etc

First 'proper' parkrun of the year done after the far more social ones earlier this week. And somewhat chuffed to clock 25.30 as it usually takes a lot longer than 2 weeks to get some speed in my legs after a marathon!

Went for my jog/walk today but the C25K app stopped every time I shut my phone! Extremely annoying as I started it 6 times throughout my run, I know I did my usual 4.5k but don't know if I ran enough or walked enough! Extremely annoying but I think I did enough. Need to figure out how to get it to run in the background

Anything is better than nothing; you’re doing well. Keep going and build up gently - and you’ll look back at the end of the month and see how far you’ve come

Well not much to brag about here but managed to kick off c25k again and happy that I managed to achieve the same speed and distance as my last attempt. 4.1mph avg speed and 2.05 Miles.

More importantly though, the treadmill plays a video as you run making you think you’re running through a marina. What they didn’t catch on the edit was a bloke with a bunch of mates falling flat on his face! Put me right off!!!!!

Hi all,

New to this thread but not new to running. Used to be club runner, never fast though, til life and Fabs got in the way. I mean who wants to get up and go out for a 10 miler when you didn’t get back from Chams til the early hours!!

Returning to running after injury that hasn’t healed properly, fractured metatarsal, so won’t be doing any great distance just hoping for a bit of chat and motivation.

Thanks guys xx

Have you got a powersave set up on your phone? Make sure the app you use is on the "allowed" list for apps to run when your screen is locked.

I've tried all that, I've uninstalled it too and it still shuts off if I hold it in my hand it's fine but it's too big to run like that and I dropped it cracked the back. I'm wondering if it's because of my music/ear buds but I don't see how as she talks to me but then turns herself off as soon as my phone turns off and in my pocket. I thought it was using strava as well but nope she's just gone again so frustrating.

Went for a run/walk today, did my usual 4.5k but really need her to talk to me and push me but I was out
