New year superstitions

A conversation with a colleague this morning got me thinking about new year superstitions.

I’m not superstitious but grew up with a mum who is, she always says never wash on New Year’s Day as you was a loved one away. To this day, this is one superstition I always follow.

My colleague is very superstitious!

She says she MUST wear red today and tomorrow as red is a colour which brings good fortune in her culture (she’s Filipino)

She has to have 12 different fruits on her table to make sure that she has an abundance of food for the coming year. Her sugar bowl must be full and she must also have sweets on the table for the same reason. As midnight strikes she throws salt out of the front door to remove bad luck from the year that’s passed. She also tosses money into the house so that wealth will come into the home during the year ahead.

There were also some others but I can’t remember them all.

Please share any New Year superstitions you have, it would be fascinating for me to hear them

I was always sent out after the bells to come back in with some shortbread, as it's good luck to be first-footed by a dark haired person.

Using the washing machine ny day apparently washes a family member away

Def...dark hair first foot over the doorway...a guy on here said he used to come in with coal...

Yeah coal too, I think it's you bringing food and warmth in for the next year.

we used to do first footing where a tall dark haired man enters the front door with a piece of coal and out the back door

My family used to leave out of the back door and let the new year in through the front. Seemed perfectly normal growing up but thinking back on it, it was just barmy

Always opened the back door to let the old year out and then the front door to let the new year in. I’m not at all superstitious though. Maybe a tad mad. We’ve always done it
