Everytime I watch it I'm struck by the level of detail when you think it was 1968 when it came out and man landed on the moon on 16-7-69 it was ahead of its time

*however, I really can't choose my favorite sci-fi film as I certainly have to many and the genre itself can encapsulate so many different facets.

*its also worth not just checking out mainstream releases or english/usa releases

I would add "Waterworld" ahead of its time for environmental concerns. The action is pretty good.

I watched this again last night on the Firestick , and the end was completely different than the DVD I have. Very weird , but is it in my Top 10 of all time . To answer the original question then...

True but that is then sci-fantasy, a hybrid genre. I can't remember where or when I read it but it was this huge breakdown of sci-fi movies which separated them in to 2 sub genres.

Science Fantasy and Sci fact-ion

Essentially it was as you say science and fantasy combined like star wars. And then you have science fiction but very much based on science facts and theories like star trek and interstellar.

sci-fi(but like some 'horror' films where a mental patient may be seeing ghosts but it in the end just becomes their delusions, then it relates itself to just mystery/drama) mystery...I can barely remember it anyway

I agree with you though, not quite science fiction is it.

time travel if its explained by using a technology is sci-fi, i.e back to the future

That is basically it really isn't it. Sci-fi needs a scientific core, needs to be explained using science.

Fantasy core is more magic, or mythological explaination.

they are sometimes combined, hence starwars is sci-fi fantasy, whereas trek is more sci-fi

True but that is then sci-fantasy, a hybrid genre. I can't remember where or when I read it but it was this huge breakdown of sci-fi movies which separated them in to 2 sub genres.

Science Fantasy and Sci fact-ion

Essentially it was as you say science and fantasy combined like star wars. And then you have science fiction but very much based on science facts and theories like star trek and interstellar.

Regarding the fantasy v sci-fi debate .

Arthur C Clarke said once ."Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Nearly all 50’s Sci-Fi movies. Could watch all of them back to back and never get bored. We even binge-watched ‘The Twilight Zone’ in bed of an evening a couple of years back. After hot, horny rumpy-pumpy of course
