Hasn't it got something to do with the broader parts of the St Andrews Cross being at the top near the flagpole?

a lot of people seem to have trouble understanding what the Union flag means, so it's no surprise if people have trouble understanding which way is up and which way is down.

To deliberately fly the flag upside down is a signal indicating a situation of 'DISTRESS'. It is also "lese Majeste" (which means: insulting the Crown), and is theoretically still a crime in the UK and its commonwealth.

I don't identify with it anyway as my flag is the St George's Cross.

The Union Flag should be flown with the red diagonals on top on the side furthest from the flagpole. The Union Jack should technically only be flown from a warship...

So the premis of the OP is irrelevant.

The Union Flag, flown upside down is a signal of distress. I forget the individual, but a govenor of an Indian province, during the days of the Raj, flew the flag upside down to attract the attention of the military forces at the post without alerting the 'natives'.....

When you and your mates see the flag flown upside down, you ought rush to the location and ask what is the problem and you can do. An uncle of mine (who had served in the army of India in the 30's) did a similar thing in Cheltenham, many years ago.....

Well.....

Actually, is was you lot who got "conquered", we were just subjugated by force of arms, we fought on for hundreds of years. When the Romans, and then the Normans, invaded, they had to build huge castles or forts in Wales, and travel in huge armed columns, as they never felt safe enought to swan around like in the rest of the conquered UK.

The reason we dont have a representative part on the flag is that, technically we were never "invited" to join the union. Being a principality, also I think means a nod to our own Royal family, of whom Owain Glyndwr had the last proper claim.

Whilst the rest of you decided to roll over and play nice, we decided to rebel, and almost made it into a proper nationwide revolt, often being outnumbered 4 or 5 to 1 against trained knights on horseback and still winning (a matter of historical fact), and even, on one occassion, being outnumbered 10 to 1, and, when meeting the opposition, Owain Glyndwr was offered the chance to surrender, when he asked his men, they said they would fight and live, or fight and die..... mainly because, in old Welsh, there is no comparable word for surrender.... we didnt know how to do it lol!

"Seems a bit unfair to me there’s no distinctive Welsh part to this flag of “British” symbolism….. dunit !!!!

Whilst the rest of you decided to roll over and play nice, we decided to rebel, and almost made it into a proper nationwide revolt, often being outnumbered 4 or 5 to 1 against trained knights on horseback and still winning (a matter of historical fact), and even, on one occassion, being outnumbered 10 to 1, and, when meeting the opposition, Owain Glyndwr was offered the chance to surrender, when he asked his men, they said they would fight and live, or fight and die..... mainly because, in old Welsh, there is no comparable word for surrender.... we didnt know how to do it lol!

you forgot to mention that most of the north east are celtic by origins, with place names that bear striking similarity to modern welsh...

i forgot u try to wind one welshman up you have the entire nation after you "

Well, again lol.....

"Modern" Scots are actually of Irish decent, the Irish island hopped up the west coast, invaded the northern Celtic lands (they were pushed north by the Romans, Hadrians Wall and all that) and wiped them out, before settling down to populate Scotland.

As for having the whole nation after you.... it reminds me of a joke that sums up the Welsh attitude to invaders.

This Roman General is marching along with his troops when on top of a nearby hill, a Welshman appears and starts yelling insults.

The General sends half a dozen soldiers after the Celt, who dissappears down the other side of the hill. There is the sound of battle being joined, then silence.

Shortly after, the Celt appears again, so the General sends 30 men.

Same thing happens, and the Celt reappears.

This time, determined to get his man, the General sends 100 men.

off they charge, and a great battle is heard on the other side of the hill.

Then, when all is quiet, one lone, badly injured Roman soldier staggers over the hill, and with his last breath says "It's a trap, dont send anymore men, there are two of them!"

I think you'll find it's to do with the 'jocks' St Andrews cross. It was added before the cross of St Patrick. So therefore the white cross is entitled to the higher position than that of the Red cross of St Patrick.

"pride in your country" you say, yet you feel the need to disrespect.

There used to be 3 naval ensigns

White, Red and Blue, status and readiness etc etc

White Ensign is now the flag of the Royal Navy (White flag with the Union Flag top left)

Red Ensign, is now the merchant navy (UK registred) (Red with the Union Flag top left)

Blue Ensign, is now the hobby sailors (Private boats) (Blue with the Union Flag top left)

The above is the simplified version, as always a lot more to the history and circumstances behind it.

The overwhelming majority of place names in the north -east, as in the rest of England, are of Germanic origin, not of Celtic origin, and are either Anglo-Saxon or Scandinavian as a reading of E.Ekwall, considered to have been Britains most eminent place-name scholar would confirm.

It is a union flag any where its flown

and is only referd to as a "union jack" if the flag pole has a jack-staff fitted, that is the extra pole sticking out from the main flag pole. this is all ways on land based sites

Henry Tudor was only one quarter Welsh, and used his (frankly suspect) links to the English House of Plantaganet* as the basis for his claim to the English Throne.

Catherine of Valois married Henry V, when widowed she married an obcure Welsh Squire called Owen Tudor, causing a stink as he was only minor gentry and not proper aristocracy. Their son Edmund married Margaret Beaufort and their son was Henry.

Margaret Beaufort was the daughter of the 1st Duke of Somerset, a senior member of the English aristocracy and a favourite of Henry VI.

As above, the 'English' were never conquered by Rome. Some people need to learn some history and actually find out who the inhabitants of mainland Britain were around 55 BC. The forefathers of those who became the modern Welsh* were the people conquered and displaced by the Roman military machine, the people who would become the English were busy defeating the Romans in the German forests - look up the Lost Legions of Varrus - and keeping the Empire on the West side of the Rhine.

*'Wales/Welsh' are actually old Anglo-Saxon words denoting 'other/outsider/foreigner/not us'.

The reason we dont have a representative part on the flag is that, technically we were never "invited" to join the union. Being a principality, also I think means a nod to our own Royal family, of whom Owain Glyndwr had the last proper claim.

Whilst the rest of you decided to roll over and play nice, we decided to rebel, and almost made it into a proper nationwide revolt, often being outnumbered 4 or 5 to 1 against trained knights on horseback and still winning (a matter of historical fact), and even, on one occassion, being outnumbered 10 to 1, and, when meeting the opposition, Owain Glyndwr was offered the chance to surrender, when he asked his men, they said they would fight and live, or fight and die..... mainly because, in old Welsh, there is no comparable word for surrender.... we didnt know how to do it lol!

you forgot to mention that most of the north east are celtic by origins, with place names that bear striking similarity to modern welsh...

i forgot u try to wind one welshman up you have the entire nation after you

The overwhelming majority of place names in the north -east, as in the rest of England, are of Germanic origin, not of Celtic origin, and are either Anglo-Saxon or Scandinavian as a reading of E.Ekwall, considered to have been Britains most eminent place-name scholar would confirm.

"

I never actually said the the "English" were conquered by the Romans, please pay attention lol! The "English" (those peoples who by then were occupying what is now England) were, however, conquered by the Normans, who were actually decendents of vikings who had worked their way down the coast of Europe and settled in the area.

And, in 55B.C. that would have been various tribes, mainly made up of Celts or Picts.

"And, in 55B.C. that would have been various tribes, mainly made up of Celts or Picts."

Well in all fairness, we don't actually know what they called themselves!

Pict is a Roman term i believe, and 'celt' is a term made up by a Welsh Nationalist and classicist in the mid 18th Century called Edward Llyudd.

In the writings of Caesar, his generals and the historian Tacitus (who visited Britannia) the only term used (apart from Romanised Tribal names) is the word 'Britonculli' which very roughly translates as 'horrible little Briton'

As for the Normans, look up the Harrying of the North, a genocidal campaign against Northern England for it's refusal to bend the knee to Norman rule.

William the bastard is not a popular man around these parts..

If the Scots do vote to leave Great Britain, this is all going to be academic really. Our flag is going to look quite strange in that case

Just to be serious for a few moments (yes, it does happen from time to time!) if the Scots decide to go it alone, so to speak, and excuse me for sounding stupid, does that mean they will be totally self-sufficient, as in a real whole new country as it were, not that it aint now, but I think you know what I mean?

el presidente Salmond wants to hedge his bets and give voters a third option - indepedence "lite" or devolution "max".

although the SNP are still streets ahead in every poll here (51 per cent at the last one), they struggle to get above 36 per cent in polls for independence

salmond wants time to convert support for the SNP into support for independence

Cameron and his chums don't want to give him the time, hence their ruse to set the terms for a poll

there is nothing more likely to drive Scots towards a yes vote than an English Tory telling Scots what to do.

And yes, if Scots vote for independence, the UK dissolves. It'll be a like a divorce, with all the assets and liabilities divvied up.

promises to be a messy business.

Its a minefield actually, just been ruminating about it here.

How the hell do you go about seperating the one from the other?

Example, what about all the Scottish lads and lasses in the Army, does that mean they will all go North to start a new Army for Scotland?

I have no idea about this but I believe The Scots only have certain devolved powers. If the Scots voted for Independence in a referendum would it have to be ratified or accepted by the British Government?

The Scottish Parliament was formed by the Scotland Act 1999 passed by Westminster.

The Act reserves powers over constitutional issues to Westminster, so a referendum run by the Scottish Parliament is "advisory" only.

That is Cameron's dilemma.

He has the legal power, but no mandate for a referendum. Salmond has the mandate, but no power.

Cameron wants to shoot Salmond's fox by devolving the power to Edinburgh, on condition the referendum is held within, say, 12 months.

The Nats want to wait until 2014.

"Seems a bit unfair to me there’s no distinctive Welsh part to this flag of “British” symbolism….. dunit !!!!

thats what you get for being conquered early in the game

Given that the Tudors were welsh you might wonder who conquered who....

Henry VII (Tudor) always stressed his English lineage as his claim to the throne.

(Wars of the Roses re-enactor here! )"

hence my comment that getting it by marriage was cheating
