I suggest reading a profile to find this out, more often than not it's clearly stated there.

If it's not and the profile is blank. Add them to hotlist and try to address their status update (best success rate for me)

If none of the above is a viable option, send a face pic and hope for the best.

I usually make sure there is a reference to their profile, and i never mention sex in the opening message, always very polite.

Seems to go a long way.
