The Joy of Bagels...

Under the Duvet

An ordinary bagel just out the packet is very flabby and underwhelming.

For years I couldn't see the appeal.

But toasted...Good Lord! It's a delight!

I've seen the light and it's bagel shape!

All praise the toasted bagel.

Amen.

Do you have a Jewish bakery near you? A bagel still hot from the oven, cold cream cheese - which one is the drool emoticon?

There's one in town, I may have to try a proper fresh one to compare and contrast.

I’m a bit nervous about it, it’s not what I’d usually go for.

Maybe I need to stop being so shallow and just seeing the doughiness. Start looking a little deeper

As the man said a proper bagel from a Jewish bakery and you will never eat a chainstore bagel again. I know people rave about Brick Lane but as I am from West London I would drop into Golders Green after clubbing. Although now my favourite bakery is on the Kilburn High Road I buy 30 plain bagels at a time to freeze and have one made up to go.

My working life passed through making bagels. That’s literally all we made all day long. Two of us stood at a bench rolling as quickly as we could. Got to the point where it was one in each hand and talking about stuff as we did it. Loved the job and loved the guys I worked with we were left to it from by the owner.

But no bread is more delightful than freshly baked bagel from the oven, with butter melting from it at 6am in the morning.

There’s a certain Jewish bagel maker in Manchester. I challenge anyone to find a better bagel.
